Caruana sfiora l'impresa con Carlsen!

Si svolge oggi l'ultimo turno della 72^ edizione di Corus Wijk aan Zee. Carlsen, che ha già vinto il gruppo A nel 2008 (ex-aequo con Aronian), è ad un passo dalla vittoria ma dovrà superare l'ostacolo Caruana. Kramnik e Shirov inseguono a mezzo punto, e dovranno affrontare rispettivamente Karjakin e Dominguez. Ridotte ad un lumicino le speranze di vittoria di Anand, distanziato di un punto e impegnato con van Wely. Il campione del mondo in carica, dopo un inizio di torneo anonimo (9 patte consecutive), ha  voluto ristabilire le gerarchie superando negli ultimi turni Shirov e Kramnik, che sino a quel momento erano in testa alla classifica.

1. e4 e5 2. Cf3 Cc6 3. Ab5 a6 4. Aa4 Cf6 5. d3 Carlsen evita la linea principale della spagnola  (0-0) per provare a sorprendere Fabiano 5..d6 6. c3 g6 7. Cbd2 Ag7 8. Cf1 0-0 9.Ag5 d5!? in questa linea poco usuale della spagnola si gioca più spesso h6 (Golod e Khalifman). La mossa del testo la troviamo nella Gvetadze (2411) - Shen (2440) 0-1 campionato mondiale a squadre femminile, Ekaterinburg 2007 10.De2 Novità dopo la prima lunga (15')  riflessione del norvegese. La Gvetadze catturò in d5 10..Dd6 11.Axf6 Axf6 12.Ce3 Ce7! ottima mossa che difende il pd5 e da strada al pc7 che potrà così dedicarsi alla lotta per il centro 13.Ab3 c6 14.h4 Carlsen rompe gli indugi e si muove sul lato di re. Adesso Fabiano potrà reagire spingendo i pedoni sul lato di donna (a5 b5) o intensificando la lotta al centro (Ae6). La spinta d4 è meno attraente perché chiude la posizione e da più forza alla coppia dei Cavalli di Carlsen (Caruana ha mantenuto la coppia degli Alfieri) 14..Ae6 15.Cg5 momento psicologicamente critico. La mossa più logica sembra Ad7 per conservare la coppia degli alfieri, ma ci vuole sensibilità  per rigiocare un pezzo appena mosso mentre i pezzi avversari si avvicinano al tuo re 15...Ad7 sensibilità che ovviamente non manca a Caruana 16.Td1 momento posizionalmente critico. La posizione si va delinenado (Carlsen non potrà arroccare lungo) ma è notevolmente complessa, di quelle che mettono in difficoltà l'amigo inhumano. Fabiano deve però evitare di ridursi con poco tempo sull'orologio (adesso ha 30' in meno di Carlsen) per non doversi poi trovare ad affrontare momenti tatticamente complessi in zeitnot. Adesso sembra indicata una normale mossa di sviluppo come Tad8 16..Tad8 17. Df3 mossa molto aggressiva alla Carlsen, che in caso di h6 lascia il ph4 in presa 17..h6 18.Cc4!? dxc4 19.dxc4 Cd5! splendida mossa che da un'ottima casa (e7) alla donna di Caruana, e il Cg5 di Carlsen è ancora in presa.  Attenti a metterla sulla rissa con Fabiano 20.Ch3 il pedone h4 è in presa, ma ci vuole tanto tanto coraggio per prendelo 20.. h5 Caruana mira più in alto minacciando Ag4 21.Dg3 ora la donna difende il pedone h4, ma in g3 è un po' scomoda 21..Ag4 minacciando De7 in caso di f6? 22.Td2 Axh4!? forzando il cambio delle donne ed entrando in un quasi-finale  con  una struttura pedonale e una disposizione dei propri pezzi migliore 23.Dxh4 Dgf3 Dxf6 Cxf6 25.Cg5 c5! fissando il pc4 su case bianche 26.f3 Ac8 27. Aa4 Rg7 l'intenzione di Fabiano dovrebbe essere quella di cambiare il Cavallo con l'Alfiere (dopo Cg8 e f6, forzando il Cg5 ad andare in h3) 28.Txd8 Txd8 giocata per riservarsi la possibilità di andare con il Re sulla seconda traversa e spostare la torre sul lato di Donna , unico luogo della scacchiera dove il norvegese può tentare di costruirsi un controgioco che bilanci la maggioranza di Caruana sul lato di Re 29.b4?! sembra prematura, visto che permette Td3 29..Td3! 30.bxc5 Txc3 31.Rd2 Txc4 32.Ab3 Txc5 33.Cxf7 Carlsen ha preferito sacrificare un pedone pur di stravolgere il tema posizionale del finale e puntando a rifarsi sul pe5 di Fabiano. Riuscirà nel suo intento? nel frattempo Caruana ha 4' più incremento per arrivare al controllo della 40esima 33...a5 34.Tc1  Txc1 35.Rxc1 adesso l'amigo inhumano propone una linea che porta ad un finale di pedoni e Cavalli favorevole al nero, ma molto molto difficile da vedere in zeitnot  35..a4 36.Ac4 b5! 37.Cd6 bxc4 38.Cxc8 h4 l'ha giocata!! 39.Cb6 Ch5 40.Cxc4 recuperando il pedone ma ... 40.Rf6! la migliore e trovata in tremendo zeitnot. Non c'e' fretta di posizionare il Cavallo in f4 e si difende prima il pe5.  I giocatori hanno raggiunto il controllo della quarantesima e Fabiano è l'unico che può giocare per  vincere questo finale, visto che il pg2 dovrebbe cadere forzatamente 41.Rd2 Cf4 sembra incredibile, ma Ce3 non va per Rg4 seguita da Cxg2!  e il cavallo non si può catturare, pena la promozione del pedone h 42.Re3 Cxg2+ 43.Rf2 a3 45.Cc4 Cd3+ 46. Rg2 Rg5 ritenendo di non poter giocare per vincere dopo la variante Cb4 47.Cxa3 Cxa2, Caruana decide di restituire il pedone provando un'altra strada che probabilmente prevede Rf4!? 47.Ca3 Rf4!? 48.Cc2 Cb2 il finale sembra comunque patto 49. Cb4 h3+ 50. Rxh3 Rxf3 51. Rh4! Rf4 52. Cd5+ Rxe4 53. Ce7 Rf3 54. Cxg6 e4 55. Ce5+ Rf4 56. Cg4 Ca4 1/2 una partita splendida da parte di Caruana e c'e' voluto il miglior Carlsen per portare a casa il mezzo punto!

The Corus Chess Tournament takes place January 16-31 in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands. Next to hundreds of amateurs, three Grandmaster Groups (A, B and C) with 14 players each play a closed round-robin. The rate of play is 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, and 30 seconds increment starting from move 1.

We have a winner already! The leader of the C grop, Li Chao, offered a draw to Stefan Kuipers after 9 moves in a Petroff, and the young Dutchman, who already scored an IM norm yesterday, had no reason to decline. The Chinese grandmaster has thus qualified for the B group next year as he’s on 9 points out of 12 games, and Robson, Vocaturo and Van Kampen have 7 points while still playing.

Leko and Carlsen (whose sister Ingrid, by the way, is currently playing in the amateur tournament in Gibraltar) repeated their game of the 2009 Tal Memorial until 12.0-0-0; today the Norwegian castled first before playing …Nc6. After one and a half hours of play they’ve reaced a rook ending that looks very drawish.

Yet again Van Wely, who remains faithful to his Najdorf, seems to have fallen into some nasty 6.Bg5 preparation, this time by compatriot Jan Smeets. Against Dominguez, Ivanchuk copied Kramnik’s set-up during the World Blitz in Moscow last year: the Scandinavian with …g6. Kramnik himself uses the Petroff against Anand; not much has happened there yet.

Shirov is in another theoretical Archangelsk Ruy Lopez against Karjakin; the two reached an ending in no time where White’s extra pawn doesn’t seem to be very relevant. Caruana-Nakamura is a Rauzer Sicilian that has some French tendencies while Short went for the rare 4…Nf6 Caro-Kann against Tiviakov.

Two, not very surprsing draws: Leko-Carlsen – the rook ending was a draw indeed, and Karjakin-Shirov, which also remained equal. Also on the other boards it’s rather quiet so far, except for Smeets-Van Wely where White’s atack has already decided the game on move 23. “I like my Najdorf, but I don’t like my results. Apparently I mixed up something in the opening again,” Van Wely said after the game. We’ll have him and Jan in tonight’s Corus News video.

O, and strictly speaking we’ve been cheering too early for Li Chao, who can still be caught of course if he loses tomorrow. Sorry about that.

Alexei Shirov lost his first game in Wijk aan Zee today. He was beaten by Hikaru Nakamura, who is now just half a point behind the tournament leader. So is Magnus Carlsen, who right after the opening won a piece against Vassily Ivanchuk.

Another very quick draw today in Van Wely-Karjakin. The explanation? The Russian is not feeling very well, and it’s not really the Dutchman’s tournament… The other games are relatively quiet, except for Smeets-Dominguez. Second Sipke Ernst expected a repetition of moves here, but Smeets just bravely continued playing.

Smeets and Dominguez eventually drew anyway, but after some very interesting complications. The two analyzed their game with pleasure and after that got some comments from both players for the daily journal. At first sight they thought there was not win for White.

Ivanchuk completely missed Carlsen’s Rd1+Bb1 idea and could have resigned much earlier. Caruana-Anand and Tiviakov-Leko were uneventful draws and it seems to be Beating the Petroff in Short-Kramnik.

Tournament leader Giri is defending a rook ending a pawn down against compatriot l’Ami. Howell already won and will probably get to shared second place again because Ni Hua won’t win against Naiditsch.

And then… the blow of the round. Nakamura defeated Shirov in an irregular Sveshnikov. He’s explaining the game in the press conference which we’re taping right now. A first interesting comment was that the American thought the Sicilian wasn’t the best choice for his opponent, since now it was easier for him to play for a win than compared to e.g. 1…e5.

Some upsets in group C, where leader Robson loses to Vocaturo – who played a very nice game – but keeps his lead since his closest rival Li Chao goes down too, against Grandelius. Short is completely winning in a queen ending against Kramnik.

It seemed safe to call it “completely winning” as GM Sipke Ernst described it that way, but in the end Kramnik managed to safe the half point. Incredible. As forest pointed out, Kramnik could have even forced the stalemate one move earlier (do you see how?) Tomorrow is a big day with Shirov-Carlsen, Kramnik-Nakamura and Anand-Ivanchuk. We’ll have GM Mihail Marin doing live commentary from 13:30 CET.

A small announcement: the top game of tomorrow’s 8th round in Wijk aan Zee is Shirov-Carlsen and we will have acclaimed chess author GM Mihail Marin from Romania providing live commentary, focusing on that game and light comments to other games.

Mihail Marin, who is the second of Daniele Vocaturo during this year’s Corus Chess Tournament, will provide commentary from the press room in Wijk aan Zee. Marin is the author of best-sellers like Secrets of Chess Defence, Learn from the Legends, A Spanish Repertoire for Black and Beating the Open Games.

Alexei Shirov was held to a draw easily by Nigel Short in round 6 of the Corus Chess Tournament. Besides a few quick draws, Leko beat Caruana, Dominguez beat Tiviakov and Kramnik beat Van Wely.

15:10 CET Despite the “friendly request” from the organizers to avoid short draws, Ivanchuk and Nakamura repeated moves in a Slav after 14 moves and then shook hands. Nakamura’s explanation after the game: “The thing is that oddly enough I had prepared this variation, looked at everything except 13.a5. I looked at about four other lines and then I overlooked this 13.a5 line and after this 13.a5 I more or less have to force a draw I think, because otherwise I am significantly worse. If I had the choice between playing a worse position with Black againt Ivanchuk or taking a draw obviously I’m gonna take a draw in that situation.

Not long after that, Anand and Carlsen also split the point. Carlsen left the venue quickly but Anand was happy to give some explanation: “I wanted to try. He surprised me with this opening; I’ve been checking lots of other stuff but exactly this Dragon I didn’t expect from him. (…) It seems that I just have to force the draw with 19.Qh4. He goes 19…e5, takes, bishop takes, swap everything down, Qe7, Qe5 and it seems to be a draw. (…) My problem is that if I don’t force the draw where I did, on the 19th move, then it takes very little for me to be worse. Either his e-pawn comes to e5 and if I don’t force the draw I’m just worse because my bishop is really bad now. It’s only good if I can keep this pawn on e7. I must have missed something in the opening.”

The main other attraction, of course, is Shirov-Short. The Latvian seems to have real chances of improving his position slowly; might become a tough afternoon for Short! Leko-Caruano is a sharp, interesting fight in a theoretical Arkhangelsk Ruy Lopez. The current evaluation is anyone’s guess and the clocks also don’t give hints in this case. The same can be said of Kramnik-Van Wely (a difficult KID) and Karjakin-Smeets, It’s clear the two Dutchmen will have to work hard for their points but so far they seem to have avoided yesterday’s disasters. Their compatriot Tiviakov has a solid position against Dominguez. For not-so-mysterious reasons, we bet on a draw in this game.

in Group B, Anish Giri faces Tommy Nyback – we’ll come back to the game in a later stage – and in C, Ray Robson will surely try to increase his lead against Bok. Look out for the endgames Reinderman and L’ Ami are playing – potential instructiveness is in the air.

As far as the A group is concerned, this 6th round is not too exciting so far. Short quite easily held Shirov to a draw, and received a “Congratulations!” whisper from Vladimir Kramnik on stage, to which the Englishman answered: “Thank you, it’s one of the best achievements in my career!” Soon afterwards Smeets and Karjakin also drew their game.

Much more fun are the B and C groups. Giri’s move 21…Kd6! was praised by the journos in the press room and one of them was reminded by the games of ex-World Champion Tigran Petrosian. Nyback might well become Giri’s next victim today.

Ni Hua-Muzychuk is a good one as well, where the Chinese GM gave a bishop, knight and rook to win the opponent’s queen and three pawns. As a result a highly rare material imbalance is left on the board. Howell and Sutovsky are in for a long game today and in C, Gupta-Vocaturo has gotten quite sharp. Bok seems to have more than enough compensation for the exchange he lost to tournament leader Robson.

Just after that last update, Bok missed a trick by Robson, who is now leading C with an amazing 5.5/6. Giri also won again and will do the press conference also today. Who doesn’t want to hear Anish’ own thoughts about his 21st move?

It turned out to be another bad day for the Dutchies in the A group. Tiviakov did win a pawn against Dominguez but his position remained very passive. The Cuban managed to keep his opponent’s queenside locked and in the ending his better pieces and passed pawn decided the game immediately. Kramnik played the – these days popular – Gligoric System against Van Wely’s KID, and had a good answer to Black’s g5-g4: a strong white-squared bishop and control over the b-file in the ending. The ex-World Champion kept on playing strongly and eventually forced resignation in a knight ending. Leko scored his first win of the tournament against Caruana after winning a piece for two pawns in a complicated Archangelsk middlegame.

In B, Giri’s win meant that the Dutchman increased his lead because Howell is defending a most probably lost queen ending. Ni Hua keeps chances for promotion as well after winning that umbalanced middlegame against Muzychuk. In C, Li Chao is only half a point behind Robson thanks to a black victory against Lie.

1) catturare con BxC : in questo modo si fissa la debolezza arretrata b2 e si creerà pressione sulla colonna B
coi pezzi pesanti e con Cb5

2) catturare DxC si da luce all'Ab7 (e il bianco non ha più il suo alfiere) , e si migliora il set up con Cc5 e Tcd8

3) Dxc4: in questo caso sarà necessario spingere i pedoni ad ovest per progredire nella demolizione della struttura del bianco, che subirà la pressione su c3}

2) inoltre al nero rimarrà solo il Cc4 facilmente marcato dall'alfiere nero da c1
3) infine il Cf2x d3 agevolerà il bianco nell'offensiva con la spinta f5 visto che si è rafforzata la difesa del punto e5 (ed anche di b2)}

{un sacrificio tematico di pedone contro la struttura del nero con e6 e g6, quali sono le conseguenze:

1) l'alfiere cattivo nero in c1 non solo diviene attivo grazie all'apertura della diagonale, ma oltretutto lo diviene contro un arrocco indebolito sulle case dello stesso colore causag6

2) il nero con GxF indebolisce l'arrocco sulla colonna G, e con la la spinta g4 il bianco aprirebbe anche la diagonale b1-h7 e la colonna F ! senza considerare che f5 è in presa e se fxg la cattura con Cf2x g4 darebbe il colpo di grazia alle debolezze del nero su f6 e h6.

3) se il nero sta fermo rischia f6 del bianco. ExF sembra la difesa più solida, sulla quale il nero
deve comunque guardarsi dalle spinte di rottura con g4 e e6.}

{Non è facile trovare la difesa migliore.Robson ha temuto il controgioco di Vocaturo rifiutando il pezzo. Infatti se} (22... gxf5 23. Nxf5 Bc5 {Qui il bianco ha varie opportunità interessanti con 24 Df3 o Dc2 con cui non solo si minacci la forchetta con b3 ma anche la spinta b4 che serve a deviare l'Ac5 dalla difesa del doppio di cavallo in e7 in caso di Dg4+Dg6.

Three draws and four victories for the black pieces, that’s the scoe of round 3 in Wijk aan Zee’s Grandmaster Group A. All Dutch GMs lost with White: Smeets to Ivanchuk, Tiviakov to Shirov and Van Wely to Carlsen. Nakamura won again; he beat Short.

The Corus Chess Tournament takes place January 16-31 in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands. Next to hundreds of amateurs, three Grandmaster Groups (A, B and C) with 14 players each play a closed round-robin. The rate of play is 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, and 30 seconds increment starting from move 1.

After two hours of play, Tiviakov has a horrible position against tournament leader Shirov – look at White’s rooks! Karjakin came with a new answer to the popular 5.Qc2 pawn sac against the Queen’s Indian. His 20…0-0 was a TN compared to e.g. Leko-Barcrot and Nyback-Wojtaszek of last year. The Ukrainian seems to have equalised comfortably. Short is playing a very rare set-up against Nakamura’s Najdorf, to keep the game as quiet as possible. In an Archangelsk Ruy Lopezn. Anand still has to prove whether he has enough compensation against Dominguez. Smeets and his second Sipke Ernst didn’t manage to predict Ivanchuk’s opening choice but White looks at least OK after grabbing the h-pawn. Caruana might have a tiny edge against Kramnik, who again opted for the Petroff. In the next update we’ll also look at groups B and C.

A good day for Black! Shirov defeated Tiviakov nicely and just gave a press conference, which will be available later over here at ChessVibes. He said that White is probably lost already after 23…Kxd7. After his win in round 1, Van Wely lost twice; today Carlsen was too strong. The Norwegian used an interesting pawn sacrifice in the QGD and quickly won two back to win the rook ending. It seems that the Dutchman shouldn’t have traded queens, to keep the intermediate move f4-f5 as a possibility.

Short ‘chose the wrong plan’ according to Nakamura and was blown away quickly. The American GM continues the great form he showed in Turkey last week.

Smeets’s king was assualted with almost all of Ivanchuk’s pieces. White went down after 27.Qe2? where 27.R5d3 to cover the third rank avoids Black’s plan for the moment.

Besides all this fireworks we saw many draws today, including the encounter between the leader and the tailender Giri and Reinderman in group B. Ni Hua joined Giri in the lead thanks to a black win against Nyback in a Grünfeld ending.

In C, Swaminathan fell for a well-known opening trap against Swinkels. Vocaturo quickly beat Van Kampen with an aggressive 6.Bg5 system. Plukkel lost without a chance against Li Chao and Gupta beat Kuipers.

In the first round of the Corus Chess Tournament Peter Leko had a very promising position against Alexei Shirov but eventually lost the game. Local hero Loek van Wely, for the 19th consecutive time in Grandmaster Group A, defeated Nigel Short, winner in Wijk aan Zee in 1986 and 1987. The other five games ended in a draw.

Round 1

In the small coastal town of Wijk aan Zee, where last week’s snow was melting in the morning, but new snow came from the sky at night, the annual festival has begun! It’s very quiet here during the rest of the winter, but as always the last two weeks of January the town is packed with chess players – hundreds of amateurs and a few dozen top GMs.

For those of you who haven’t visited the Corus website yet, I can tell you that it’s quite different from previous years. Well, at least the homepage is. Videos have become an important way to bring the news, and I’m honoured and thankful to play such an important role for this great event. Besides the daily news bulletins and ‘newsflashes’ at coruschess.com you will be able to watch the press conference videos here at ChessVibes. Today we had Loek van Wely which I’ll post as soon as possible.

In the A group quite a lot of games ended in a draw, but the great thing about Corus is that with these three groups, there’s never a dull moment. Anand was under pressure with Black against last year’s winner Karjakin, but managed to hold it. Today he tweeted: ‘A draw …and a sigh of relief ! Oh God ! I have to play much better than this. Must find my form quickly too many rough edges to my game.’

For at least one round Van Wely is a true KingLoek again, with a fine victory over Nigel Short. At the press conference Hans Böhm asked if it would have made a difference it Short had tried …g5 and …h5 at some point. Van Wely thought the result would have been the same, but Short would at least have had more fun in the game!

A tired and disappointed Peter Leko showed up in the press room after a very long game against Alexei Shirov. The Hungarian had come up with a good novelty but then spoilt his advantage. “I miraculously escaped before the first time control, but at the second I collapsed.” A fortunate but good start for Shirov, who won the 500 Euro daily prize for fighting his way back in the game.

Giri, Nisipeanu and Sutovsky started with good wins in the B group and of these games, the 250 Euro best game prize went to 15-year-old Dutch champion Giri. Against So, Naiditsch couldn’t win an ending that’s suddenly showing up quite often: R vs black-squared B and fixed h-pawns on h3 and h4.

In the C group, Grandelius, Li Chao, Vocaturo and Robson won their games to grab the lead. The 100 Euro prize was awarded to Li Chao for his victory over Benjamin Bok.

Daniele Vocaturo sul palcoscenico di Wijk aan Zee!

Prima volta con due italiani sul palco scacchistico più importante del mondo! Se altri tornei, di anno in anno, possono contendere al Corus la palma di torneo più forte, non c?è dubbio che ?per tradizione e formula la grande manifestazione olandese reciti la parte di prima della classe.

Dal 2004 gli organizzatori hanno aggiunto un terzo torneo GM, il GM-C appunto, particolarmente attento ai giovani, ospitando future star insieme a GM esperti, con una buona componente femminile e dando spazio anche ai migliori ragazzi olandesi. E? emblematico che la prima edizione sia stata vinta dal tredicenne Carlsen!

Non sempre i giovani sono riusciti ad affermarsi: nel 2005 vittoria di Vladimir Georgiev (con Alekseev solo quarto), nel 2006 si è imposto Suat Atalik mentre nel 2007 Krasenkow scavalca all?ultimo turno Nepomniachtchi, partito in modo eccezionale (7,5 su 8) ma con un netto rallentamento negli ultimi turni.

Bisogna attendere il 2008 e il 2009 per tornare sulle orme di Carlsen, con Fabiano Caruana prima e Wesley So poi, che si sono imposti peraltro nelle edizioni più forti nella breve storia del torneo C (media 2494 nel 2008 e 2521 nel 2009), partendo comunque entrambi con il n? 1 di tabellone.

Tanto talento tra le scacchiere ma in chiave futura spicca sicuramente il nome di Ray Robson. Il 15enne neo GM americano ha preso il volo lavorando prima con Kaidanov poi, attualmente, con Onishuk e sta tenendo un ritmo di crescita notevolissimo, molto vicino a quello di Caruana alla sua età. Ha una buona creatività e come Fabiano dà la netta sensazione di avere quel ?qualcosa in più? che appare preludere all?elite mondiale: vedremo!

In relazione all?età crescita meno dirompente (ma anche meno strutturata ed assistita) per Li Chao e Abhijeet Gupta, che restano comunque i due favoriti della gara. Da oltre un anno oltre i 2600, fino a una punta di 2643, il giovane cinese ha già dimostrato di essere un giocatore di spessore, come si è visto anche nell?ottima World Cup disputata. Spesso è stato preferito al coetaneo Wang Hao (sicuramente più talentuoso e creativo) come quarta scacchiera della Cina, ma qui entrano in gioco probabilmente anche i rapporti all?interno della squadra. Più lenta la crescita di Gupta, che non ha finora dato pieno seguito alla sua vittoria, per certi versi inattesa, nel campionato del mondo under 20 del 2008.

Difficile per gli altri inserirsi nella lotta per la vittoria, così come è difficile pronosticare il torneo di Daniele Vocaturo. La conquista del titolo di GM è arrivata al culmine di un periodo di rendimento stabilmente intorno ai 2550, mentre nella seconda metà dell?anno Daniele ha avuto risultati meno costanti.

Qualcuno ha interpretato questa fase come una difficoltà nel voler ?dimostrare? qualcosa, in quanto GM e giocatore dal quale ci si aspettano vittorie straordinarie come quelle di Reykjavik.

La mia impressione, considerando che sta lavorando con Marin e con tempi di studio molto maggiori di quanto avvenuto in passato, è che questo sia per Daniele un periodo di ?accumulo?, di maturazione di una maggiore padronanza strategico ? posizionale da mettere al servizio della sua notevolissima creatività. Una fase fisiologica, in questo senso, il cui esito dovrebbe corrispondere, con tempi che possono essere anche non brevissimi, ad un nuovo salto di qualità. L?appuntamento è oltre quota 2600!

He was the last-minute replacement for Malakhov and never lacks fighting spirit: Gata Kamsky today won in Reggio Emilia after beating Zoltan Almasi in a fantastic last-round game. The American and the Hungarian both scored 6.5/9 but Kamsky had the better tiebreak.

The 52nd edition of the “Torneo di Capodanno” took place December 28th – January 6th at the Astoria-Mercure hotel in Reggio Emilia. It was a 10-player round-robin with GM Fabiano Caruana, GM Michele Godena, GM Daniele Vocaturo, IM Sabino Brunello (all from Italy), GM Gata Kamsky (USA), GM Eltaj Safarli (Azerbajan), GM Baadur Jobava (Georgia), GM Konstantin Landa (Russia), GM Viktor Bologan (Moldavia) and GM Zoltan Almasi (Hungary).

Rounds 6-9

After five rounds, Almasi and Kamsky were leading the field with 3.5 points out of 5 games. The two kept the lead for one more round thanks to victories with the black pieces in round 6. Kamsky beat Brunello with Black in a g3 Grünfeld; the Italian’s exchange sacrifice was interesting but 29.Nd3 too passive. Almasi, who played the Berlin Wall regularly long before Kramnik used it to beat Kasparov, got under serious pressure against Bologan. However, a few moves before 40 the picture suddenly changed completely and with 44.Rf7? Bologan even lost what was probably a drawn ending.

The next round Almasi beat Safarli, who tried the Norwegian Variation of the Ruy Lopez (4…b5 and 5…Na5). The Hungarian was well prepared and played like Karjakin did to beat Mamedyarov at the World Blitz Ch in Moscow last month. Kamsky dropped back half a point after a draw with Landa, and the same scenario repeated was repeated in round 8: Almasi won, against Vocaturo, and Kamsky drew, with Bologan.

It’s always nice when the two strongest players meet each other in the last round, and this is what happened today. And what a finale it was! This time no Berlin Wall, no, Almasi went for the Archangelsk which is quite popular again these days. Already on move 17 Kamsky came with a stunning exchange sacrifice in return for a pawn and a strong initiative.

At first Almasi defended well, but soon after the second blow 24.Ba7 things went downhill for Black. Great stuff from Kamsky, and what a way to end a tournament for the organizers.

What about the young rising stars? Well, Brunello and Safarli played close to their expected score, but Vocaturo did much worse with a performance rating in the 2300s. As stated before, he played quite interesting chess and should have scored better. He will for sure, in the future. In fact he might be proving that theory already in the Corus C group which starts in ten days from now.

L’ungherese Zoltan Almasi (foto), vincendo con il bianco contro l’azero Safarli, allunga in classifica su Gata Kamsky, che contro Landa pareggia rischiando abbastanza. Gli italiani pareggiano tutti, a cominciare da Godena e Brunello, che nell’incontro diretto firmano l’armistizio dopo sole 22 mosse, con Michele che evidentemente non si fida troppo della buona disposizione dei pezzi nemici.  Caruana ha il bianco contro Jobava, e non riesce mai ad avere un vantaggio importante, nonostante qualche rischioso tentativo. Infine Vocaturo, che con il bianco viene aggredito da Bologan già dopo poche mosse, ma difendendosi bene riesce ad entrare in un finale con un pedone in più, ma a questo punto purtroppo ricade in qualche passaggio a vuoto, come ieri contro Landa, e si ritrova a dover inseguire per salvare il pareggio.
La classifica dopo il settimo turno è la seguente:

1° Almasi 5,5/7; 2° Kamsky 5; 3°-4° Caruana e Godena 4; 5°-7° Jobava, Bologan e Landa 3,5; 8° Safarli 2,5; 9° Brunello 2; 10° Vocaturo 1,5

Nel prossimo turno Almasi avrà il bianco contro Vocaturo, Kamsky il nero contro Bologan, quindi l’ungherese potrebbe allungare ulteriormente per mettersi al sicuro dal temibile scontro diretto dell’ultimo turno che dovrà affrontare con il nero.
Per il terzo posto sono in lotta i nostri due alfieri, Caruana deve affrontare Brunello e Landa, mentre Godena ha Landa e Bologan.

Caruana e Godena (foto) tengono bene il passo dei maestri stranieri, vediamo in dettaglio la bella vittoria di Fabiano contro il giovane Safarli. Godena pareggia anche contro Jobava, ed è ancora imbattuto.  Purtroppo ancora ko  Brunello contro Kamsky e il combattivo Vocaturo contro Landa (Daniele ha rifiutato un paio di volte la ripetizione di posizione).

Brunello vs. Almasi

Oggi 5° turno con doppio scontro tutto italiano, vediamo in dettaglio la vittoria di Sabino Brunello (nella foto del turno precedente) contro Vocaturo, ma prima diamo un rapido sguardo anche alle altre partite, ricordando che in classifica conducono Almasi e Kamsky con 3,5 seguiti da Godena e Bologan con 3; Caruana, Jobava e Safarli 2,5; Landa 2; Brunello 1,5 e Vocaturo 1.

Kamsky-Jobava 1-0
Entrambi sfoderano un gioco aggressivo, il nero sacrifica un pedone ma i suoi pezzi puntano bene contro l’arrocco bianco, quindi una posizione incerta. Ma alla 34a mossa Jobava gioca la spinta d6-d5 e si autointrappola la torre, che dopo Ce6 non ha più case. Peccato, poteva esserci ancora spettacolo.

Bologan-Safarli 1-0
Già alla 14a mossa si entra in micidiali complicazioni, che terminano solamente alla 29a mossa (!!), con Safarli che si ritrova con gli alfieri di colore contrario e due pedoni in meno. Da li a poco abbandonerà. Poteva il nero giocare meglio? Difficile dirlo, ma sicuramente poteva giocare più prudente impedendo al bianco di ritrovarsi con un pedone sostenuto in f7.

Alla 22a mossa viene siglato il pareggio in una posizione in cui il bianco, con un pedone in meno, tiene saldamente legato il nero.

Godena-Caruana 1/2-1/2
Una francese che il bianco cerca di portare verso una placida patta. Ma Fabiano decide di complicare giocando 21…Dc4, sacrifica un pedone e cerca di vincere con donna e cavallo, ma infine deve accontentarsi del perpetuo. Sempre più bravo Godena, che dopo 5 turni resiste imbattuto.

Vocaturo-Brunello 0-1
Una caro-Kann in cui il bianco chiude il centro con e4-e5. Brunello cerca di essere intraprendente sull’ala di re, giocando 13…g5. Ma Vocaturo reagisce proprio li con la spinta 20.f4. Il nero provoca il bianco a giocare il sacrificio di alfiere 25.Axf5. La posizione diventa particolarmente tagliente e Brunello per liberarsi rende una qualità con 29…Txf3, Vocaturo la restituisce subito con 31.Dxb7 per non semplificare, ma nonostante tutto si entra in un finale favorevole al nero. Finalmente Brunello raccoglie quello che gli era sfuggito per inesperienza o un pizzico di sfortuna nei turni scorsi.

It’s a 10-player round-robin with GM Fabiano Caruana, GM Michele Godena, GM Daniele Vocaturo, IM Sabino Brunello (all from Italy), GM Gata Kamsky (USA), GM Eltaj Safarli (Azerbajan), GM Baadur Jobava (Georgia), GM Konstantin Landa (Russia), GM Viktor Bologan (Moldavia) and GM Zoltan Almasi (Hungary).

At first Vladimir Malakhov was going to play in Reggio, but because of his success at the World Cup the Russian Chess Federation wanted him on the team for the upcoming World Team Championship in Bursa, Turkey. The Italian organizers were then helped by Gata Kamsky, who was happy to step in. The rate of play in Reggio is 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes to finish the game + 30 seconds per move starting from the 1st.

In a way the field of players is similar to that of the London Chess Classic: a mixture of strong, international players and local, rising stars. Where favourites such as Almasi and Kamsky seriously try to win the tournament, young stars like Vocaturo and Safarli have not much to lose and can go all or nothing in almost every round. This has led to quite a fightful event so far, with a drawing percentage as low as 44%.

In the first round, all victories were scored with the black pieces. Safarli defeated Brunello in an ending that should have been a draw (after 31.e4) – 36.Be1 seems to be the decisive mistake. Caruana started strongly with a Black victory against Bologan in an Archangelsk Sicilian. White resigned because of 42.Rxg3 Bxe4!.

Godena was under pressure throughout his game against Almasi but held the draw. Against Kamsky, Vocaturo got his pawns running in a Sicilian, but positionally Black was better and in the second phase of the game White could only defend, but not safe himself.

In round 2, Godena beat his young compatriot Vocaturo using an Alapin Sicilian. Black was well prepared and absolutely fine after 25 moves, but blundered on move 34 where 34…Qd2! was necessary. Bologan had just reached equality with Black against Jobava, but was suddenly outplayed completely in the ending.

The Moldav GM recovered in the next round and defeated Brunello, who repeated Aronian’s unsuccessful answer to Dominguez’ 8.d4 Anti-Marshall played at Corus, almost year ago. Brunello’s new 16…Ba8 is interesting, and he was doing fine for a long time, but in timetrouble things went downhill.

Almasi played very strongly against Jobava and beat the Georgian GM in a Rauzer Sicilian.

Vocaturo scored his only point so far in this third round. He beat Caruana, who won an exchange but then committed several mistakes.

On December 31st, Jobava decided to start early with the fireworks. Against Vocaturo he played aggressively and directed the game into a Four Pawns KID. His 21.Rxf7!? was extremely interesting, but not necessarily good for White, as Vocaturo showed with a series of strong moves. This probably cost him too much time on the clock, because the Italian completely threw away a much better position in the phase after move 30. A pity. In another g3 Grünfeld, Almasi was too strong for Brunello while Bologan managed to beat Landa with the black pieces in a King’s Indian, Bayonet variation. One mistake of his opponent (24.Rc7?) was all he needed.

Vocaturo must do his best to forget about the first five rounds, to be able to do better in the remainder of the tournament. Also in yesterday’s game against Brunello he reached an excellent position, but let it slip away, first to an unclear ending, and then to a lost one. In a very irregular, almost coffeehouse English Opening, Kamsky castled queenside against Jobava, who blundered his rook on move 34.

The last four rounds will be played Sunday, January 3rd till Wednesday, January 6th. Interestingly, Almasi and Kamsky will play each other in the last round.
