The gap between Magnus Carlsen (2826) and Veselin Topalov (2803) has increased to 23 points on the July 1 FIDE rating list. The Norwegian won 13 points whereas the Bulgarian dropped 9. Third is World Champion Viswanathan Anand, now with 2800 points exactly. Wang Yue dropped from 8th to 28th.
FIDE has published its July 1st rating list and since all the big events were entered in time, there’s no difference between the official top 10 and the “live” top 10 of Hans Arild Runde (which you can also find in the far right column on this website). In fact there aren’t very big changes in the top 10 compared to the previous list either.
Carlsen’s fine victory in Romania last week got him another 13 rating points and because Topalov lost 9 points in his match with Anand, the gap between the world’s number one and two is now 23 points. Those 9 points went to Anand, who thereby surpassed Kramnik to regain the 3rd spot, at a nice 2800 precisely.
At the Kings’ Tournament Gelfand lost twice to Radjabov; the two switched places on the rankings between spots 10 and 13. Malakhov and Navara are in the top 20 on this list – the latter thanks to a stunning 8.5/9 at the Czech Championship.
Vugar Gashimov, who was still 7th in the world on the January 2010 list, dropped further to a 26th spot. The biggest skydive was performed by Wang Yue, who lost 36 points and went down from 8th to 28th. Winning 16 points, Wang Hao surpassed him to become China’s number one at 2724.
After entering the top 100 on the May list, Anish Giri won 30 more points to climb to a 62nd place at 2672, but the highest rated Dutch player is Loek van Wely with five points more. Ivan Cheparinov is back in the top 100 with 2661.
The women’s list is still very stable, with very few changes in the top 10. Judit Polgar again didn’t play, but Humpy Koneru did. The Indian lost 22 points at the 3rd FIDE Grand Prix in Nalchik and so the gap increased from 60 to 82 points. Below you’ll find the new top 100, the top 100 women, the top 20 juniors and the top 20 girls. We give the first two lists including the changes with the previous lists.

Karjakin wins on tiebreak in Poikovsky
He needed a little help from his opponent in the last round, but after winning the ACP World Rapid Cup Sergey Karjakin also managed to finish first in Poikovsky. Finishing with three out of three, Viktor Bologan also scored 7/11, but the Moldav GM had a slightly worse tiebreak.
The 11th edition of the tournament named after 12th World Champion Anatoly Karpov took place June 2-13 in Poikovsky, Russia. For the first time the tournament had not 10, but 12 players. See our first report for more info.
Rounds 9-11
In round 9 Vitiugov managed to surprise Rublevsky in the opening – in a well-known QGA position.
Vitiugov-Rublevsky

White went 6.d5!? and after 6…b5 7.Bb3 exd5 (7…c4 8.dxe6! Qxd1+ 9.Bxd1) 8.Bxd5 Ra7 9.e4 Nf6 10.Nc3 Nxd5 11.Nxd5 Nc6 12.O-O Be6 13.a4 Black fell into a trap with the careless 13…Be7?

Can you see how? See the game viewer below.
Karjakin couldn’t beat Onischuk, who defended a rook ending superbly. After reaching the following position, the American easily found a few only moves.
Karjakin-Onischuk

72…Kf4! 73.Ra4+ Kf3 74.Ra3+ Kf4 75.Kc6 g5 76.Kd5 g4 77.Ra4+ Kf3 78.Ke5 g3 79.Ra3+ Kg4 80.Kf6 and Karjakin offered a draw. Without Black’s f-pawn the ending is lost, but with it it’s a draw, the reason being that it protects the black king from a check on f8!
Fireworks in the following game.
Sutovsky-Vitiugov

White couldn’t resist the temptation and went 22.Rxf7!? Qxf7 23.Bxg6 and here Black should have given back a piece with 23…Qf6!! 24.Be4+ Qg5 25.Bxc7 Qxg3 26.Bxg3. Instead, after 23…Qf2+ 24.Qxf2 Rxf2 25.Kxf2 Rf8+ with 26.Kg1 White could have kept an advantage.

But Sutovsky missed another trick by playing 26.Kg3? – can you see what was wrong with that move?
Karjakin had been under pressure in a Winawer French, but again luck was not on Sutovsky’s side.
Karjakin-Sutovsky

By now the ending should end in a draw, but with 47…Rh3? Black didn’t give his rook enough checking distance. 47…Kd6 48.Kf5 Rf1+ is equal. 48.g5! Kd6 49.Kf5 and White won.
After two strong wins Bologan got yet another full point in a bishop ending against last year’s winner Motylev, who this time finished at the bottom of the standings.
Bologan-Motylev

Black erred with 61…f4? (61…g5! is a draw) 62.Bc3+ Kg5 63.Bxg7 Kxh5 64.Bd4 Kh4 65.Bc5 Bb8 66.Kd4 Kg5 67.d6 a5 68.Kd5 a4 69. Bb6 1-0

Poikovsky: Jakovenko in sole lead
Dmitry Jakovenko leads the Karpov tournament in Poikovsky with 5.5/8. In round 8 he beat Alexander Motylev with Black, while co-leader Alexander Riazantsev lost to Sergey Karjakin with the white pieces in a spectacular game. The top seed is now half a point behind the leader.
The 11th edition of the tournament named after 12th World Champion Anatoly Karpov takes place June 2-13 in Poikovsky, Russia. For the first time the tournament has not 10, but 12 players. See our first report for more info.
Rounds 7-8
In our previous report we complained a little bit about the many (short) draws in Poikovsky, but there’s no reason to be unhappy about what happened on Wednesday and Thursday. Many great fights, and three black victories in the last round, brought Jakovenko in sole lead.
The following game was an interesting draw.
Vitiugov-Riazantsev

White should be winning. However, after 32.Bxf8 Black managed to complicate matters with 32…Rb3!? 33.Qa5 (33.Qc5!) 33…Bd3+! 34.Rxd3 Rxd3 and now instead of 35.Bh6! White went 35.Qa6? gxf5! and Black saved himself.
Yesterday Riazantsev wasn’t so lucky anymore against Karjakin, who managed to defend against a strong, prepared piece sacrifice.
Riazantsev-Karjakin

White came up with 12.Nf5!?. Karjakin took the knight, defended by playing his king to the queenside and all the way to d2 and eventually won!

Poikovsky: Bologan, Jakovenko, Karjakin, Riazantsev on 1.5/2
Viktor Bologan, Dmitry Jakovenko, Sergei Karjakin and Alexander Riazantsev started with one draw and one win at the Karpov tournament in Poikovsky, Russia. The other participants are Ivan Sokolov, Emil Sutovsky, Alexander Onischuk, Baadur Jobava, Sergei Rublevsky, Arkadij Naiditsch, Nikita Vitiugov and Alexander Motylev.
The 11th edition of the tournament named after 12th World Champion Anatoly Karpov takes place June 2-13 in Poikovsky, Russia. For the first time the tournament now has not 10, but 12 players. In this round-robin of 11 rounds, the rest day is on June 8th.
Poikovsky is located in the Nefteyugansk region of the Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous area. It’s about 150km eastern of Khanty-Mansiysk. Its name comes from the nearby river Poyka. The population is close to 30,000 people and the main economic drive is the extraction of oil and gas.
Eleven years ago local authorities decided that a big chess tournament would do the region well. A year later a chess school for children was opened, like the tournament named after Anatoly Karpov. This year the chess school celebrated its 10th anniversary on June 1st, International Children’s Day. The festivities were opened by Karpov himself.
In the 11th tournament there are two players who never missed a single event in Poikovsky: Bologan and Onischuk. Jobava, Karjakin and Vitiugov make their debut this year. Motylev is defending his 2009 title.
Evgeny Surov posted a first photo report on Chesspro, where many players can be seen planting a tree in Poikovsky, including Anatoly Karpov himself.
Top seed this year is Sergei Karjakin, who just finished the ACP World Rapid Cup successfully a few days ago. He and the other finalist in Odessa, Dmitry Jakovenko, started with 1.5/2, and so did Viktor Bologan and Alexander Riazantsev.

Eljanov is Ukraine’s number one
Magnus Carlsen (2813) tops the world rankings by one point. On the May 1 FIDE rating list Veselin Topalov has won seven rating points to reach 2812. Vassily Ivanchuk is not the highest rated Ukrainian anymore; Pavel Eljanov confirmed his steady progress and surpassed him to enter the world’s top 10. And Alexei Shirov is back there too.
FIDE published its May 1st rating list and this time there’s not a big difference between the official top 10 and the “live” top 10 of Hans Arild Runde (which you can also find in the far right column on this website). Only Anand’s and Topalov’s ratings are different because of the current World Championship match: virtually speaking Topalov has dropped back to 2806 and Anand is just 3.6 points away from the 2800 barrier.
The biggest news this time is that Vassily Ivanchuk isn’t Ukraine’s number one player anymore, for the first time in years. Winning another 15 points in 20 games, on the May 2010 list Pavel Eljanov has reached a 9th spot, while Ivanchuk lost seven points and dropped slightly from 11 to 12.
With solid results in not so many games Wang Yue climbed from 10 to 8, and the 10th place is now occupied by Alexei Shirov. Boris Gelfand is out of the top 10 again but only lost 9 rating points. Sergey Karjakin might see the first results of his switch of federations and trainers: he climbed from 21 to 14. Alexander Morozevich didn’t play this period but still dropped three places, to 27 now. Anand’s seconds Rustam Kasimdzhanov and Peter Heine Nielsen can be found next to each other on the list: numbers 39 and 40.
One of the biggest climbers was Ian Nepomniachtchi, who won no less than 39 points and went up from 78 to 42. Reaching 97, Anish Giri is a top 100 player for the first time.
The women’s list has been stable for a long time now, with very few changes in the top 10. Both Judit Polgar and Humpy Koneru didn’t play, so the gap is still 60 points. Below you’ll find the new top 100, the top 100 women, the top 20 juniors and the top 20 girls. We give the first two lists including the changes with the previous lists. All data courtesy of FIDE.

Gold for ShSM-64 at Russian Team Championship
Chess Club “64″ from Moscow Saturday won the Russian Team Championship. The event was more or less decided on Friday when they held their main rival St Petersburg to a 3-3 tie. As expected, an easy win against Economist II in the last round secured the gold medals.
The 17th Russian Team Championship took place from April 1st to 10th in hotel complex “Dagomys”, close to Sochim Russia. The rate of play was 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 50 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 10 minutes to end the game with 30 seconds increment for each move.
The “Premier League” was a single round-robin consisting of ten teams, with no less than three of the nine teams have an average rating of 2700 or higher. The lineups:
1. Economist-SGSEU – 1 (2704) – Wang Yue, Eljanov, Tomashevsky, Alekseev, Ni Hua, Moiseenko, Roiz, Andreikin
2. SPb Chess Fed (2700) – Ivanchuk, Svidler, Vitiugov, Movsesian, Zvjaginsev, Efimenko, Sakaev, Yemelin
3. ShSM-64 (2700) – Gelfand, Karjakin, Wang Hao, Caruana, Grachev, Riazantsev, Najer, Savchenko
4. Yugra (2689) - Grischuk, Jakovenko, Malakhov, Rublevsky, Landa, Sjugirov, Pridorozhni, Kabanov
5. Tomsk-400 (2687) – Ponomariov, Motylev, Bologan, Kurnosov, Inarkiev, Khismatullin, Timofeev, Amonatov
6. Ural (2618) – Nepomniachtchi, Belov, Kobalia, Lysyj, Ponkratov, Deviatkin, Shariyazdanov, Rashkovsky
7. M.Chigorin Chess Club (2584) – Khairullin, Matlakov, Romanov, Popov, Ionov, Shimanov, Anisimov, Levin
8. Etude-Contact (2555) – Khenkin, Rakhmanov, Chadaev, Papin, Krylov, Gabrielian, Chernobay, Orlinkov
9. Economist-SGSEU – 2 (2548) – Kovchan, Evdokimov, Novikov, Dyachkov, Iljushin, Lushenkov, Shukh, Sharafiev
10. BelGU (2493) – Ivanov, Potkin, Gasanov, Panarin, Bryzgalin, Uzhva, Fomichenko, Khoroshilov
Rounds 8-9
A day before El Clásico the chess version of the Russian clasico was held in Dagomys, where the teams of Moscow and St Petersburg finally met. But where in football on Saturday night the Bernabeu stadium saw a great match, in which the coastal town defeated the capital 2-0 (with yet again an important role for Lionel Messi), in Dagomys the encounter was disappointing, with short draws on all six boards: Gelfand-Ivanchuk, Karjakin-Svidler, Wang Hao-Vitiugov, Caruana-Movsesian, Grachev-Zvjaginsev and Savchenko-Efimenko. Thus, with a 3-3 match score the capital held on to their 2-point lead in the standings.
On the same day there was a small incident in the match Economist 1 vs Chigorin Chess Club. Economist’s board 2 Pavel Eljanov had already left Dagomys, on his way to the German Bundesliga, and apparently because of some sloppy paper work the team couldn’t play with their reserve player. Maxim Matlakov scored a full point for Chigorin without playing, but Economist won the match 3.5-2.5 anyway.
On Saturday “64″ crushed Economist 2 with a 1-5 score to claim the gold medals. St Petersburg took silver after a narrow 3.5-2.5 victory over Economist 1.

Last, decisive weekend Bundesliga
This weekend the 14th and 15th round of the Schachbundesliga will be played. At the playing venues Baden-Baden and Bremen most probably it will be decided who will win the championship.
Two rounds before the end of the season Baden-Baden, Solingen and Bremen are fighting for the title in the Schachbundesliga. Most probably the following pairings will decide who will win the championship.
14th round: Saturday, April 10, 2010, 2 pm
Playing venue Bremen:
Werder Bremen – Solingen
Playing venue Baden-Baden:
OSG Baden-Baden – SV Mülheim Nord
These are the four best teams of the league so anything can happen.
In the case that two teams have the same team points at the end of the season there will be a tiebreak at the end of April. The board points are not relevant as second criteria for the title.
As in the previous rounds the Schachbundesliga publishes the lineups of the teams involved at the venue, where Baden-Baden is playing:

64 (Moscow) leads in Dagomys, meets St Petersburg today
Chess Club “64″ from Moscow is the favourite to win the Russian Team Championship. The team with Boris Gelfand on first board leads with a 2-point margin. They play their nearest rival today, St Petersburg, whose women’s team won already. Again we selected 14 games and annotated them.
The 17th Russian Team Championship takes place from April 1st to 10th in hotel complex “Dagomys”, close to Sochim Russia. Play starts daily at 15:00 local time which is 13:00 CET (GMT/UTC +3) with a rest day on April 6th. The rate of play is 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 50 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 10 minutes to end the game with 30 seconds increment for each move.
The “Premier League” is a single round-robin consisting of ten teams, with no less than three of the nine teams have an average rating of 2700 or higher. The lineups:
1. Economist-SGSEU – 1 (2704) – Wang Yue, Eljanov, Tomashevsky, Alekseev, Ni Hua, Moiseenko, Roiz, Andreikin
2. SPb Chess Fed (2700) – Ivanchuk, Svidler, Vitiugov, Movsesian, Zvjaginsev, Efimenko, Sakaev, Yemelin

Rounds 6-7
After the rest day on Tuesday, the Russian Team Championship resumed on Wednesday with the 6th round. Co-leader “64″ from Moscow continued strongly with a 4.5-1.5 victory over Economist 1. Karjakin defeated former compatriot Eljanov to reach a score of 4/5. Wang Hao (also 64) beat Tomashevsky and Riazantsev deafeted Ni Hua; the other three games ended in draws, including Gelfand-Wang Yue. St Petersburg lost a tough match against Ural 3.5-2.5, where all games ended in a draw except for Ponkratov-Zvjaginsev, where Black sacrificed a rook on c3 in a Sicilian but couldn’t get enough compensation.
The next day 64 won their sixth match, a 1-5 victory over the Chigorin Chess Club, to reach a score of 13 match points. St Petersburg recoved with a narrow 3.5-2.5 win against Yugra, with a theoretically important victory for Ivanchuk against Grischuk’s Najdorf (Poisened Pawn).

A game of kings
Working on an update of the Russian Team Championship, we came across a marvelous game. A game between two current Russian kings of chess: Ian Nepomniachtchi, the reigning European Champion, and Alexander Grischuk, the winner of the Amber Blindfold tournament. Besides, in this game both kings played an important role. Enjoy a thorough analysis.

17th Russian Team Championship starts
Today the 17th Russian Team Championship takes off. In the mens’ section ten teams play a round-robin of nine rounds; the women’s section has seven teams. Favourites in the men’s section are Economist (with Wang Yue and Eljanov on top boards), 64 (with Gelfand and Karjakin), St Petersburg (with Ivanchuk and Svidler) and reigning champs Tomsk-400 (with Ponomariov and Motylev).
The Russian Team Championship takes place from April 1st to 10th with a rest day on the 6th. The men’s section has a “Major League” and a “Premier League”; the women’s section is called “Major League” as well. The Premier League has been put back from seven rounds last year to nine rounds this year.
The championship takes place in Sochi, Russia – the city where the 2nd FIDE Grand Prix tournament was held, and which has been selected to be the host of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014. It’s a resort city situated in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, just north of the northern Republic of Georgia border and the southern Russian border fronting the Black Sea.
The championship is held in hotel complex “Dagomys”. Dagomys is a microraion of Sochi, located about 18 km north of the city centre. It’s known for its resorts, vacation spots and tea plantations. It was developed as a resort since before the Russian Revolution, when a botanical garden was founded by order of Nicholas II. The hotel complex was opened there in 1982.

In the Premier League no less than three of the nine teams have an average rating of 2700 or higher. The lineups:
1. Economist-SGSEU – 1 (2704) – Wang Yue, Eljanov, Tomashevsky, Alekseev, Ni Hua, Moiseenko, Roiz, Andreikin
2. SPb Chess Fed (2700) – Ivanchuk, Svidler, Vitiugov, Movsesian, Zvjaginsev, Efimenko, Sakaev, Yemelin
3. ShSM-64 (2700) – Gelfand, Karjakin, Wang Hao, Caruana, Grachev, Riazantsev, Najer, Savchenko
4. Yugra (2689) - Grischuk, Jakovenko, Malakhov, Rublevsky, Landa, Sjugirov, Pridorozhni, Kabanov
5. Tomsk-400 (2687) – Ponomariov, Motylev, Bologan, Kurnosov, Inarkiev, Khismatullin, Timofeev, Amonatov
6. Ural (2618) – Nepomniachtchi, Belov, Kobalia, Lysyj, Ponkratov, Deviatkin, Shariyazdanov, Rashkovsky
7. M.Chigorin Chess Club (2584) – Khairullin, Matlakov, Romanov, Popov, Ionov, Shimanov, Anisimov, Levin
8. Etude-Contact (2555) – Khenkin, Rakhmanov, Chadaev, Papin, Krylov, Gabrielian, Chernobay, Orlinkov
9. Economist-SGSEU – 2 (2548) – Kovchan, Evdokimov, Novikov, Dyachkov, Iljushin, Lushenkov, Shukh, Sharafiev
10. BelGU (2493) – Ivanov, Potkin, Gasanov, Panarin, Bryzgalin, Uzhva, Fomichenko, Khoroshilov
The women’s section has seven teams this year. The strongest teams are SPb Chess Fed (with Cmilyte, Socko and Arakhamia-Grant), Economist-SGSEU (Zhao Xue, Ushenina), AVS (Stefanova, Muzychuk) and ShSM (Kosteniuk, Kovalevskaya). Apparently the Kosintseva sisters don’t participate.
Play starts 15:00 local time which is 13:00 CET (GMT/UTC +3). The rate of play is 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 50 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 10 minutes to end the game with 30 seconds increment for each move.

Classifica finale 2009:
1 Tomsk-400 11.0 23.5 2 ShSM-64 9.0 24.5 3 Ural 9.0 24.0 4 Economist-SGSEU - 1 9.0 23.5 5 SPbChFed 8.0 23.0 6 TPS 6.0 20.5 7 Eurasia-Logistic 4.0 19.5 8 M.Chigorin CC 0.0 9.5

12th and 13th round Bundesliga
This weekend the 12th and 13th round of the Schachbundesliga are being played. Baden-Baden is playing with Shirov, Bacrot and Naiditsch on top boards.
Since many years there was no such tension in the Schachbundesliga as this year. Four rounds before the end of the season three teams have the chance to win the German championship – Baden-Baden, Werder Bremen and SG Solingen. The German champion Baden-Baden faces Emsdetten and Wattenscheid and is odds-on favourite just like Solingen, who faces the relegation candidates SK König Tegel and SF Berlin.
The most interesting encounter of the whole weekend will take place in Essen-Katernberg, where Werder Bremen meets Mülheim. Both teams are expected to play with many grandmasters. Mülheim is trying to save the fourth place in order to qualify for the European Club Cup. At least six teams are fighting against relegation. Especially at the playing venues Munich and Berlin-Tegel we can await some really hard-fought battles.
As in the previous rounds the Schachbundesliga publishes the lineups of the teams involved at the venue, where Baden-Baden is playing:

FIDE publishes March 1 ratings, Linares not counted
Just a few days ago Veselin Topalov won the Linares tournament and narrowed the gap with Magnus Carlsen on the live rating list to just one point. On the March 1st FIDE rating list the Norwegian leads with a personal record of 2813 and is still 8 points ahead of Topalov.
It’s already an improvement to have six rating lists a year instead of four, but today we are reminded again of the fact that a monthly, or even weekly official list might be even better. While Carlsen and Topalov are just one (in fact 0.7) rating point away from each other on the “live list” by Hans Arild Runde (which you can also find in the far right column on this website), on the official list the distance is 8 points because Linares hasn’t been counted yet.
World Champion Viswanathan Anand lost his third place to Vladimir Kramnik; between them there are just three points. This means that the upcoming World Championship match in Sofia will be played between the current world’s number 2 and 4.
Vugar Gashimov was Azerbaijan’s number one player briefly, but he’s out of the top 10 again. His 6th place is now occupied by his compatriot Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who is back among the elite after a lesser period. Grischuk and Svidler climbed to spots number 7 and 8.
Vassily Ivanchuk is out of the top 10 again; he dropped slightly from 8 to 11. Hikaru Nakamura saw a strong period awarded with a 17th place. Alexander Morozevich’ decline continued; the former World’s number 2 can now be found on spot 24. There are now 37 players with a rating of 2700 or higher.
In the women’s list nothing much changed. The difference between Judit Polgar and Humpy Koneru decreased a bit further, from 68 to 60 points. Below you’ll find the new top 100, the top 100 women, the top 20 juniors and the top 20 girls. We give the first two lists including the changes with the previous lists. All data courtesy of FIDE.

Gashimov-Anand today’s top game in the Bundesliga
This weekend the 10th and 11th round of the Schachbundesliga are being played. On board one of the top match between Baden-Baden and Werder Bremen, Vugar Gashimov (Werder Bremen), who travelled from Linares to Heidelberg, plays the World Champ, Viswanathan Anand.
In the 10th round of the Bundesliga the German champion OSG Baden-Baden faces the most serious contender Werder Bremen. It will be the most exciting match in the history of the Schachbundesliga, and both Baden-Baden and Werder Bremen will play with their nearly best possible lineup. The elo average of Baden-Baden is 2717 and of Bremen 2679. Both teams will have only top 100 players from the current world ranking at their disposal. Bremen will play on the first two boards with the Azerbaijani GMs Vugar Gashimov and Shakhriyar Mamedayrov, both known for their uncompromising style.
Laurent Fressinet and Tomi Nyback will also defend the “green-white coloured”. After nine rounds they belong to the five top scorers of the league.
Undoubtedly the biggest attraction of the whole weekend is World Champion Viswanathan Anand. Two months before his match against Veselin Topalov in Sofia he makes a “break” in his preparation to support his team in Germany. For many years he’s maintained friendly relations to the environment of Baden-Baden so his appearance doesn’t come as a big suprise.
Etienne Bacrot and Germay’s number one Arkadij Naiditsch will also play for Baden-Baden. They belong to the five best performers of the whole league so far in this season.
Here are the line-ups and the pairings of the match Baden-Baden – Werder Bremen:

8th and 9th round of the Bundesliga
The 8th and 9th round of the Schachbundesliga and three matches from round 7 will take place from the 5th to the 7th of February 2010. We provide you with the pairings at the playing venues Munich, Mülheim, Berlin and Remagen. Some famous Wijk aan Zee and Gibraltar participants are joining for their Baden-Baden team…
OSG Baden-Baden is the only team of the Schachbundesliga left without any loss of points. The upcoming weekend the German champion will face the two teams of Berlin and is odds-on favourite. Under the same precondition starts the only serious competitor for the title Werder Bremen. Bremen is facing the teams of München and Erfurt. Both of them are relegation candidates. Some interesting derbies are taking place in Mülheim, where the host is facing Katernberg and Wattenscheid for the “hegemony in the West”.
All line-ups of the teams in Berlin, e.g. OSG Baden-Baden, are published two days in advance. This is carried out due to the new rule, which was implemented from the beginning of this season.

Merci Samir.

Russia wins World Team Championship
Russia won the World Team Champioinship Wednesday with a 3-1 victory against Israel. The USA drew 2-2 with Azerbaijan and edged out India by just half a board point to take silver. Games round 9 with notes.
The 7th World Team Championship takes place at the Merinos Congress Centre in Bursa, Turkey from January 3rd till 14th, 2010. It’s a 9-round round-robin with 10 teams of 6 players: 4 players + 2 reserves, and one coach/captain. The time control is 90 minutes for 40 moves +30 minutes to end the game, with 30 seconds increment from the start. At the tournament the zero-tolerance rule is in effect, and draw offers are not allowed before move 30. Teams are Russia, Brazil, China India, Egypt (continental champions), Armenia, Israel, USA (Olympiad qualifiers), Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Greece (organizing country and two invited federations).
Round 9
A 2-2 against Israel would probably have been enough for Russia, since the USA, 1 match point and 1.5 board points behind, would never score a 4-0 against Azerbaijan. Well… perhaps it was theoretically possible in the end, since the Azeri’s showed up without Gashimov and Radjabov. But Guseinov, Mamedyarov and the two Mamedovs held the Americans to 2-2 thanks to excellent opening preparation.
And so the Russians won the title quite convincingly in the end. After their surprising loss against Greece in round 2 they won all their matches (including a 3-1 against main rival USA) and drew with Armenia. In the last round they were too strong for Israel, where Boris Gelfand is still in a class of his own. He drew with Grischuk, but boards 2-4 lost 2.5-0.5 and Sutovsky must have been losing too.
Sutovsky-Malakhov

Black just won an exchange and exchanged queens, but White managed to hold this.
Vitiugov’s last move against Rodshtein was pretty:
Vitiugov-Rodshtein

33.Qxf7+! 1-0
Their 3-1 win against Egypt paints a too rosy picture for the Armenians. OK, Adly was outplayed by Aronian, but Amin was doing alright for most of the game against Akopian and it looks like Ezat could have drawn against Pashikian with 57.Bf7. India finished an excellent tournament with a convincing 3.5-0.5 victory over Brazil.
Both Egypt and Turkey scored one win and one draw in Bursa but Turkey finished last with just half a board point less. In the last round, Firat saw ghosts:
Firat-Mastrovasilis

Here White resigned, but 31.g3 is not clear at all.
Mamedyarov seems to be fully back in the world elite. After some strong months at the end of 2009, he scored the highest tournament performance rating in Bursa: 2950.
Although we were a bit skeptical about the tournament formula (and we still are about the way teams are being selected – where on earth was the Ukraine?) we must say that the combination of strong and weak teams at least led to very interesting fights, and several brilliant games. If this event set an example for the rest of the year, 2010 will see great chess.
The next big one already starts in two days: the Corus Chess Tournament. Travelling from Bursa to Wijk aan Zee are Akobian, Harikrishna, Nakamura, Robson and Sutovsky.

Russia Wins World Team Chess Championship
Russia beat Israel 3:1 in the last round of the World Team Chess Championship to successfully close the campaign and take home the gold medal. European Champion Evgeny Tomashevsky and Nikita Vitiugov brought the key points on the boards with white pieces. The team Russia collected 15 match points, having only lost against Greece in round two and tying the match against Armenia in round seven. Vitiugov brought 5.5 points from six games and Vladimir Malakhov contributed 5 points from seven games.
The United States and India finished with 13 match points, but the silver medal goes to the United States thanks to the higher sum of individual points. It was a fantastic run for the young American team, who even held the lead in the Championship until succumbing to the Olympiad winners Armenia in round eight. Hikaru Nakamura was in marvelous form and scored many beautiful wins on the top board. With 6 points from 8 games, he took the gold individual medal, while his teammate Alexander Onischuk achieved the same feat on the second board, with 6.5 out of 9 games. The success is even greater because the US played without Gata Kamsky, one of their best players, who in the meantime won the strong Reggio Emilia tournament.
The well rounded team of India fought hard and deservingly reached the third place and bronze medal. Krishnan Sasikiran held the top board well in the competition with the world's top players, while Asian Champion Ganguly Surya Shekhar contributed a lion's share of points on the third board, where he also claimed the individual gold medal.
Greece played each match until the bare kings and signed four wins and five losses, without draws. They stunned the new World Champion Russia and 2008 Olympiad winner Armenia. The inexperienced but quickly progressing home team of Turkey finished the last, but they are boosting the victory against Olympiad silver medalists from Israel.
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov from Azerbaijan had the best individual result in this Championship, with incredible 8 points on the fourth board.
Round 9 results: EGYPT 1 - 3 ARMENIA ISRAEL 1 - 3 RUSSIA BRAZIL ½ - 3½ INDIA GREECE 2½ - 1½ TURKIYE UNITED STATES 2 - 2 AZERBAIJAN
Final standings (match and ind. points): 1. RUSSIA - 15 (24) 2. UNITED STATES - 13 (21½) 3. INDIA - 13 (21) 4. AZERBAIJAN - 12 (22) 5. ARMENIA - 12 (20½) 6. GREECE - 8 (18) 7. ISRAEL - 7 (17) 8. BRAZIL - 4 (12½) 9. EGYPT - 3 (12) 10. TURKIYE - 3 (11½)

The Fabulous 10s: World Team 10, The New Chess
The New Chess!
When young Grandmasters whip out crazy theory backed by millions of pre-game CPU cycles, this is the new chess, Ladies and Gentlemen.
[Event "World Team"]
[Site "Turkey"]
[Date "2010.01.12"]
[White "Vitiugov, Nikita" (Russia)]
[Black "Rodshtein, Maxim" (Israel)]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "D15"]
1. c4 c6 2. Nf3 d5 3. e3 Nf6 4. Nc3 a6 5. d4 b5 6. b3 Bg4 7. h3 Bxf3 8. Qxf3 e5!!?
The New Chess, Indeed
I believe Levon Aronian started to popularize this wild shot. What follows is a sequence of bizarre and somewhat logical moves resulting in more computer-aided insanity.
9. dxe5 Bb4 10. Bd2 Bxc3 11. Bxc3 Ne4 12. Bb4 bxc4 13. Qg4
So far, so crazy modern theory. Note that 13. bxc4 Nd7! (13…c5 14. Rd1!) 14. Rb1 Rb8 15. cxd5 cxd5 16. Qd1 Qh4 17. g3 Nxg3 18. fxg3 Qe4 19. Rh2 a5 is equal!
13… c5 14. f3 Nc6 15. fxe4 Nxb4 16. Qxg7 Rf8 17. exd5
This?!
17…Qh4+ My computer, admittedly running on fewer cycles than the players, prefers the absolutely craven material grab 17…Nc2+ 18. Kf2 Nxa1 19. Bxc4 Nc2 20. Qxh7 Na3 – talk about a laborious capture-and-slink-back! - and here is a sample absurd continuation: 21. d6 Nxc4 22. bxc4 Rb8 23. Rf1 Qg5 24. Rb1 Rxb1 25. Qxb1 Rg8 26. Qb7 Qh4+ 27. Kg1 Kf8 28. Qc8+ Kg7 and black is happy since his King has somehow found safety. Well, if my computer is much newer, its shorter ponder time might have accomplished the same cycles. The players and I need to compare computer benchmarks.
18. Ke2 Qe4 19. Kf2 (19. bxc4?! Nc2 20. Qh6 Nd4+ 21. Ke1 Rb8)
19… Nc2 20. Qh6 Qg6 21. Qf4 Nxa1 22. Bxc4 Nc2 23. d6 Rg8 24. g4!
This is terrible for black. White completely dominates. I refer to the prior note on move 17 for a possible improvement.
24…Ra7 25. Rd1 Qg5 26. Qe4 Rg6 27. Ke2 h5
A nice win is to be had
28. Rd5?
Here White missed a vicious win. 28. d7+!! Rxd7 (28… Kd8 29. Bxf7 Rh6 30. e6 Nb4 (30… Qe7 31. Qc6 wins) 31. e7+ Qxe7 32. Qxe7+ wins) 29. Bxf7+ Rxf7 (29… Kxf7 30. Rxd7+ Ke8 31. Qb7 Qxe3+ 32. Kd1 and wins, an amazing variation and the one most likely missed by white!) 30. Qa8+ Ke7 31. Qd8+ Ke6 32. Qd6 mate)
28… Kd8? In mild time trouble, black has to try the tricky 28… Qh4! – the only correct response is 29. Qxc2!. Note after 29. Rxc5?? Qe1+! black turns the tables and wins!
After 29. Qxc2! Qxh3 30. Rxc5 white should take the point.
29. Qxc2 Now white wins without much trouble and even gets to finish it with a nice blow.
29…hxg4 30. e6 Qh6 31. e7+ Ke8 32. Qf5 Rd7 33. Qxf7+! Nice. Mate in 8.
The rather cruel computer points out that 33. Rxc5 is Mate in 7!
At any rate, in the game, if black takes it is indeed mate: 33… Kxf7 34. Rf5+ Kg7 35. Rf7+ Kh8 36. e8=Q+ Rg8 37. Qe5+ Rg7 38. Rf8+ Kh7 39. Bd3+ Rg6 40. Qh8 mate.
1-0
A competitively important win for white – vive the New Chess!

The Fabulous 00s: Sadness and Despair at the 2010 World Team
Tough Times in Turkey: USA Gaffes vs Russia
The 2010 World Teams are in full swing in Bursa, Turkey.
The USA came out of the gate very lame versus Russia and was severely trounced as two of our players uncharacteristically didn’t know the opening phase.

Vladimir Malakhov is a rather conventional player and is best at opponents who commit senseless hara-kiri in well-known structures. He is not very good in original strategic situations, as Mamedyarov has proved in the past. Unfortunately, this important USA-Russia game belongs to the former category.
1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 Nf6 4. e5 Nfd7 5. f4 c5 6. Ngf3 Nc6 7. Nb3
A bizarre move, wasting several tempi to close off the queenside.
7. Nb3 - This?!
7…c4 A livelier game results from 7…f6 with equal chances.
8. Nbd2 b5 9. Be2 Nb6 10. Nf1 Bd7 Nothing is wrong with the simple 10..Be7 and 11…O-O. What is black attacking?
11. Ne3 Be7 12. O-O Qc7 12…O-O is fine for black.
13. Bd2 a5 13…O-O is fine for black. 14. g4? f6! and black has a small edge.
14. Be1 O-O-O?
A huge lemon and very surprising from veteran GM Shulman.
After any move not committing black’s king to the queenside, black is fine. For example,
14… b4 15. c3 O-O 16. g4 f6 and black is all right.
No... not king to the queenside!
15. b3 a4 16. Rb1 Qa7 17. bxc4 bxc4 18. Bf2 Even the simple 18. c3 already gives white a huge and fairly automatic plus.
18… Na5 19. f5 g6 20. f6 Ba3 21. Ng5 Be8 22. Bg4 Nc6 23. Nxe6! Child’s play for any grandmaster. Black could already resign. A total debacle, doubly so in a team event.
fxe6 24. Bxe6+ Rd7 25. Nxd5 Nxd5 26. Qf3 Nd8 27. Bxd5 Qa6 28. e6?! To show best this situation, 28. Bxc4! Qxc4 29. Qa8+ Kc7 30. Rb8 instantly won.
28… Rxd5 29. Qxd5 Nxe6 30. Bg3 Nc7 31 | | | |
