The 2010 Reykjavik Open ended in a four-way tie between Abhijeet Gupta, Yuriy Kuzubov, Ivan Sokolov and Hannes Stefansson. The four grandmasters all ended on 7/9; Dutchman Sokolov had the best tiebreak.

The Reykjavik Open took place February 24 – March 3 in the capital of Iceland. It was a 9-round Swiss with 104 players (20 GMs, 16 IMs). The rate of play was 1.5 hours for 40 moves plus 30 minutes to end te game, with an increment of 30 seconds starting from move 1. The main sponsor was MP Bank, the bank started by grandmaster Margeir Pétursson and the only bank in Iceland that more or less managed to avoid the biggest damage in the crisis so far.

As always the Reykjavik open was quite a strong event, with 11 GMs rated higher than 2550 and six rated 2600 or higher. Besides the usual suspects (Baklan, Dreev…) there were the sometimes quite famous veterans (Westerinen, Ehlvest, Romanishin) and some of the biggest talents around (Nyzhnyk, Jorge and Deysi Cori).

In the end the first place was shared between Abhijeet Gupta (India), Yuriy Kuzubov (Ukraine), Ivan Sokolov (The Netherlands) and Hannes Stefansson (Iceland). Sokolov recovered well from his terrible result at his last open, the open in Cappelle-la-Grande. For local hero Stefansson it was the third time in a row that he ended (shared) first, and the fifth time in total.

A Bursa, nella zona nord-occidentale della Turchia, si svolge dal 5 al 13 gennaio la settima edizione del Campionato del Mondo per nazioni. La competizione si tiene nei primi giorni del 2010, in realtà però è relativa all’anno 2009 dato che la manifestazione ha cadenza quadriennale.

Il Campionato del Mondo per nazioni ha una storia relativamente recente: nasce nel 1985 e originariamente tutte le sue edizioni avrebbero dovuto tenersi ogni quattro anni a Lucerna in Svizzera, dove peraltro si erano svolte le Olimpiadi scacchistiche del 1982. Il progetto venne abbandonato dopo quattro edizioni, trasferendo la competizione in Armenia nel 2001 e in Israele nel 2005. La formula è sempre stata quella del torneo ad inviti: dieci le squadre invitate che si confrontano in un girone all’italiana. Attualmente vengono ammesse le squadre vincitrici dei Campionati Continentali d’Europa, Asia, Africa e America (in questa edizione Russia, India che ha rimpiazzato il forfeit della Cina, Egitto e Brasile), le tre squadre meglio classificate alle precedenti Olimpiadi (Armenia, Israele e USA), due squadre invitate dalla FIDE (Azerbaigian e Grecia) e il paese ospitante (Turchia).

Nella Russia assente Kramnik, ma anche Svidler. Fallito il tentativo di schierare per la prima volta Karjakin in una formazione russa, i regolamenti FIDE l’hanno impedito e Sergey è stato sostituito da Jakovenko. Attesa per Malakhov che ha fatto molto bene nel 2009. Sono i Campioni del Mondo per nazioni in carica avendo conquistato il titolo nel 2005 a Beer Sheva, dopo un emozionante ultimo turno, nel quale hanno surclassato i Cinesi fino ad allora in testa alla manifestazione. L’edizione del 2005 vedeva presente nella squadra femminile della Cina (fino al 2005 partecipava al Campionato anche una formazione femminile), una giocatrice che farà poi sensazione, l’allora 11enne Hou Yifan.

Il maestro Paoli (vedi foto) sarebbe molto orgoglioso di questa 52a edizione del suo torneo di Capodanno, che permette ai quattro più forti maestri italiani (di cui ben 3 under 21) di cimentarsi contro sei temibili grandi maestri stranieri. Infatti, quando intorno agli anni ‘80 Paoli aveva incominciato a trovare sponsor per la sua manifestazione, questi cercavano principalmente pubblicità attraverso la forza del torneo (in parole povere la media ELO), e quindi per i maestri italiani non vi è quasi mai stata la possibilità di competere contro avversari nei primi 50 al mondo, ma soprattutto questa occasione non la hanno mai avuta dei ragazzi così giovani.

Nelle fotografie sopra (tratte da “LItalia Scacchistica”), vediamo due giocatori italiani, il MI Giustolisi e il M° Contedini impegnati contro forti avversari nella 4a edizione del torneo, la prima che vede un successo italiano: Giustolisi con 8/11 precede un forte lotto di partecipanti, gli MI Lehmann, Ghitescu, Padevski e Haag e i GM Pirc e Canal.  Meno bene va a Contedini, che giunge 10°-12°.

E giungiamo al 1970 con il secondo e per adesso ultimo successo in solitario di un nostro portacolori: Sergio Mariotti (foto da “L’Italia Scacchistica”) si impone di forza su di un buon lotto di giocatori, comprendente il GM Damjanovic e i MI Kozma, Bertok, Mista e Troianescu.

Le edizioni si susseguono, nella foto sopra  (da “L’Italia Scacchistica” ) vediamo il gruppo dell’anno 1972, torneo vinto da Soltis che vede l’esordio internazionale del giovane bolognese Renato Cappello.

Negli anni ‘80, come già detto, entrano gli sponsor e spariscono gli italiani in gara: nella foto sopra (da “L’Italia Scacchistica” ) alcuni partecipanti all’edizione 1986/87, vinta da Ribli, con i primi cinque classificati imbattuti, indice di scarsissima combattività, e purtroppo nessun italiano in campo.

Ed ecco finalmente i campionissimi: Karpov nel 1989/90 (foto da “Scacco” ) giunge secondo alle spalle di Ehlvest, nel 1990/91 vince e nel 1991/92 arriva dietro ad Anand, in compagnia di Kasparov (che così non ha il suo nome nell’albo d’oro).

E qui finiscono i soldi, forse a causa del mancato successo di Kasparov,….fatto sta che l’edizione dopo è molto interessante, perchè vede ben otto maestri italiani (foto tratta da “Torre e Cavallo”) contendersi il titolo di campione nazionale in un torneo a cui partecipano anche 3 super GM: Vaganjan, Portisch e Azmaiparashvili. Godena giunge terzo (battendo tutti e tre gli stranieri e non vincendo nemmeno una partita agli altri 8 italiani!) e si aggiudica meritatamente il titolo, anche se solo per spareggio tecnico sui bravi Manca ed Arlandi.

Negli anni ‘90 la forza dei giocatori presenti tende a diminuire, ma questo può essere utile per far mettere in luce qualche giocatore italiano. L’edizione 2000/01 è vinta da Oleg Romanishin (foto Chessbase), giocatore che vent’anni prima era giunto tra i primi al mondo.

Le ultime due edizioni, vinte da Almasi e Ni Hua, hanno visto una buona crescita qualitativa, e questa che sta per iniziare, la 52a, promette ancora meglio, sia per il temibile gruppo di GM stranieri, che per la presenza dei 4 migliori giocatori italiani. Da parte mia cercherò di riproporvi ogni sera le partite più interessanti, con qualche commento.

Rubinstein, Alekhine, Capablanca, Euwe, Fine, Keres, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Spassky, Tal e Karpov, giusto per citare qualche nome, chi non darebbe un mese di stipendio per finire in questo albo d’oro alzi la mano! Eppure scopro con somma sorpresa che il campo dei partecipanti non è certamente all’altezza della storia del torneo, forse complice un primo premio di “sole” 2.000 sterline…..

Hastings, amena località balneare nella costa meridionale dell’Inghilterra….beh, diciamo subito che a dicembre fare un bagno in quelle acque non è che sia il massimo, forse è meglio giocare a scacchi. Perchè la cartolina dice famosa dal 1066?

Semplice, perchè nel 1066 vi si tenne una importante battaglia tra le truppe di Aroldo II Re degli Anglosassoni e Guglielmo II Duca di Normandia, che aveva in neri (cioè doveva invadere l’Inghilterra)  e che vinse con una brillante combinazione: “Guglielmo convinse i suoi a fingersi spaventati e, al successivo attacco, quando i Normanni cominciarono a ritirarsi, gran parte dei Sassoni si gettò all’inseguimento. Scesi dal colle, i cavalieri si voltarono e caricarono sulla scompigliata formazione nemica.”

Dal 1066 passiamo direttamente al 1895, anno che vede il primo grande torneo di Hastings, non ancora  disputato nel periodo di Capodanno,  ma in pieno agosto, per la gioia degli accompagnatori che potevano fare il bagno. Quel memorabile torneo, al quale partecipò anche l’italiano Beniamino Vergani, si concluse con l’inatteso successo dello semi-sconosciuto americano Pillsbury davanti a tutti i più forti giocatori dell’epoca, Lasker, Steinitz, Cigorin e Tarrasch in testa.

Nel 1919 si disputa un’altra edizione estiva, vinta da Capablanca (la terza ed ultima è del 1922 e vincerà Alekhine), e finalmente giungiamo all’inverno del 1920, quando parte la prima edizione a cadenza annuale, quella 1920/21, che vedrà il successo di Frederick Dewhurst Yates (foto sopra da Chessbase). Da allora ecco i vincitori:

Avete visto che nomi? Fino agli anni ‘90 la politica era quella di fare un torneo con pochi giocatori (normalmente 10), invitando qualche asso straniero e molti giovani britannici, ma negli ultimi anni dopo una edizione ad eliminazione diretta, si è passati al sistema svizzero, e purtroppo è diventato quasi impossibile convincere qualche forte giocatore a cimentarsi in un torneo-lotteria.

Questa è la sede di gioco, io sinceramente mi aspettavo uno di quegli enormi palazzi dell’800 tutto guglie……comunque qui si tengono l’open principale e gli altri tornei minori.

Quest’ultima è la signora del già citato GM ukraino. Come possiamo contare, 15 giocatori con un Elo superiore a 2400 punti, e sicuramente altri si aggiungeranno.

Attenzione anche al talentuoso 19enne britannico David Howell (foto Chessbase sopra), che nel recente torneo di Londra è rimasto imbattuto con avversari del rango di Carlsen e di Kramnik, e che se non ha un calo di forma dovrebbe essere il naturale favorito.

Durante lo svolgimento del torneo cercherò di aggiornarvi sulla situazione ed eventualmente presentarvi qualche bella partita.

After Anish Giri and Vassily Ivanchuk also drew their second encounter quickly, it was Sergei Tiviakov who finally won a game in Hoogeveen. In the fourth round he beat Judit Polgar and grabbed the lead with 2.5/4.

The 17th Univé Chess Tournament, formerly known as Essent Tournament but sponsored by insurance company Univé this year, takes place October 16-24 in Hoogeveen, The Netherlands. As always the Crown Group is a 4-player, double round-robin with this year Vassily Ivanchuk (2756), Judit Polgar (2687), Sergei Tiviakov (2670) and Anish Giri (2552) playing for a € 10,000 prize fund. The time control is 40 moves in 1.5 hours + 30 minutes to finish the game, with 30 seconds increment from the start.

Round 4

Although yours truly had originally planned to stay just two days in Hoogeveen, the local gezelligheid has kept me here so far. Many participants of the open group are staying in a bungalow park in Echten, about 9 km from Hoogeveen, where they play soccer and blitz every night before the inevitable laptops come out. Especally GM Jesse Kraai, who by the way has a PhD in philosophy, is a dangerous opponent on the soccer pitch, thanks to his American interpretation of football…

I’m joining a group in one of the bungalows and it’s still hard to get used to all these teenagers sitting next to each other on a couch with a laptop, analyzing their game with Rybka or preparing for tomorrow’s opponent. But that’s chess anno 2009!

To start with the open group: despite decades of experience with the Closed Ruy Lopez, Oleg Romanishin couldn’t reach equality against Friso Nijboer in today’s round 7, and although the former world’s number 11 got away with a bad ending, eventually the point went to the Dutch grandmaster. He was joined in the lead by English grandmaster Stewart Haslinger, who also played strongly in Hoogeveen last year, finishing shared first with Alexandr Fier and… Friso Nijboer.

After the traditional rest day on Wednesday, including the equally traditional dinner with the sponsors, the participants of the Crown Group today returned to the Hoogeveen town hall for the 4th round. In their return match Ivanchuk and Giri drew about as quickly as their first encounter on Sunday. The Ukrainian tried the Slav Exchange and you might think the story ends there, but no, a few moves after they left theory, the board was on fire.

Giri’s 16…c5!? was a bold move that seemed to be asking for trouble, but at the board Ivanchuk couldn’t find the refutation. Afterwards he mentioned 18.b3 Rc8 and now 19.Rb1!, a move he missed, as interesting. At the moment of writing Anish started a new blitz session with Michail Brodsky in the press room, and at the same time he’s discussing openings with IM Merijn van Delft and making jokes with others. He’s quickly becoming part of the Dutch chess scene, and at the same time part of a group that’s called “very strong grandmasters”.

Sergei Tiviakov was the one to break the series of draws in the Crown Group by beating Judit Polgar. As always he started quietly, and objectively speaking there was nothing wrong with Black’s position but Polgar simply missed the tactic 29.Nd3 followed by e4-e5 today. In itself this wasn’t so bad, but then she missed that after 29…Ree8 30.e5 Black has 30…Ng4! which is not clear at all. Instead Polgar gave an exchange, but according to Tiviakov the ending must always be winning for White due to the protected passed pawn. In a video interview that will be published later, the Dutch GM will tell some more about the game.

Making a video about a game that lasted only eight moves, now that’s a challenge. But I thought, why not? At least Brodsky and Nijboer had something to explain, hadn’t they, after their short draw in round 6 of the Univé Open in Hoogeveen.

It was a disappointing little act on the top board, but luckily there was enough spectacle to witness on the other boards. We’d like to draw your attention to e.g. Gruenfeld-Ootes, in which the Israeli veteran mated his opponent nicely. Down below there’s a selection of games from the open group played so far.

At 15.00 CET today the first round of the Dortmund super-tournament takes off with Leko-Kramnik, Carlsen-Jakovenko and Naiditsch-Bacrot. It’s yet another six-player, double round-robin and we’ll be providing daily coverage.

The Sparkassen Chess-Meeting 2009, part of the Internationalen Dortmunder Schachtage, takes place from July 2nd to 12th, 2009. It will be played for the 37th time. Since 1992, the Sparkassen Chess Meeting has belonged to a very restricted group of annual top events in the chess world (which has become a little bit bigger now with Nanjing and Bazna).

This year six players will participate in a double round robin tournament:

Sparkassen Chess Meeting (Dortmund) 2009 | Schedule & results

Antti Parkkinen collected some statistics for us. Of this year’s players, both Kramnik and Leko will participate for the 15th time. Naiditsch has previously played in Dortmund 6 times, Bacrot and Carlsen once each. Jakovenko is the only first-timer.

Kramnik and Leko have been the players most often seen in Dortmund (14 times each before this year), followed by Michael Adams and Vishy Anand (10 times each). In 2000, the public could witness a silicone brain challenging the top humans. The computer JUNIOR 6 didn’t do too bad: it scored 4.5 points out of 9. The experience has not been repeated since in Dortmund.

The most successful player in the history of Dortmund tournaments has been Vladimir Kramnik. He took first or shared first no less than 8 times (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2006 and 2007). Anand (1996, 2000 and 2004) and Leko (1999, 2002 and 2008) did the same 3 times.

GM Miroslaw Grabarczyk takes first with a football scoring system

The Festival Internazionale Brescia took place on 6-14th June in Brescia, Italy. 64 players from 16 countries took participation, among them were 17 Grandmasters. The scoring system was adopted from football leagues, namely 3 points for win and 1 for draw. Polish GM Miroslaw Grabarczyk took a clear first place with 18 points (5 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss) from 9 rounds.

Situazione Norma MI: A Dvirnyy e Valsecchi serve una patta per la norma. Per Dvirnyy arriverebbe anche il titolo, visto che sarebbe la sua terza noma e che superato quota elo 2400. Per Valsecchi, invece, sarebbe la seconda norma.   Genocchio, con una patta, realizzerebbe quella che per lui sarebbe la quarta norma mentre Axel Rombaldoni, la sua quarta norma, l'ha già realizzata con un turno di anticipo.

Dal 6 al 14 giugno si svolgerà il 1° Torneo Internazionale di Brescia 2009.  Scacchierando allestirà, ogni giorno, un articolo di rimando al sito ufficiale nel quale i lettori potranno seguire e commentare l'andamento degli incontri. 

MI Bruno, Fabio (ITA, 2441) - GM Korneev, Oleg (RUS, 2587) 1° Torneo di Brescia 06.06.2009 VII turno [Megalovic]

Il 1° torneo di Brescia è la prima prova che affronta, da giocatore, il Maestro Internazionale Bruno dopo la recente nomina a Direttore Agonistico della FSI. Sinora Bruno ha disputato un buon torneo, restando imbattuto e conquistando tre patte contro altrettanti Grandi Maestri (Rotstein, Frolyanov e Sveshnikov).  Grazie ai risultati sinora ottenuti, Bruno è ancora in corsa per ottenere la sua terza norma di Grande Maestro. 

1.Cf3 d5 2.d4 Cf6 3.e3 e6 4.Ad3 b6 5.0-0 Ab7 6.Ce5 questa variante del sistema Colle è stata spesso giocata, con ottimi risultati (6 vittorie, 3 patte e una sola sconfitta, contro Anand), da Jussupow 6..c5 vi sembrerà strano, ma questa mossa ha un solo precedente: Payen - Fedorchuk 1/2 Parigi 2008. Sono comunque possibili rientri in altre partite 7.c3 Payen preferì preparare il fianchetto sul lato di donna giocando b3 7...Cbd7 8.f4 g6 9.Cd2 Ag7 come nella Straeter - Anthony Miles 0-1 Muenster 1993 10.b4 Straeter giocò 10.a4 e solo successivamente b4 10..c4 11.Ac2 b5 12.a4 a6 adesso Bruno può decidere se chiudere il lato di Donna (a5), aprire la colonna a (axb5), o mantenere un minimo di tensione giocando, ad esempio, una mossa di Donna 13.Df3 questo è un momento delicato, visto che si stanno decidendo i temi strategi del prosieguo della partita. Korneev adesso può arroccare o optare per una mossa più flessibile, ad esempio Dc7 13..0-0 il bianco si lascia preferire, non fosse altro perché può decidere se chiudere il lato di donna e/o iniziare le operazioni sul lato di Re (magari con g4), mentre il nero non può far altro che attendere. L'alfiere campochiaro del nero è poi completamente murato e difficile da riciclare, mentre il collega camposcuro del bianco, in prospettiva, punta sull'arrocco avversario. Comunque adesso è prevedibile una lunga riflessione da parte di Bruno 14.a5 dopo 20' di riflessione, Bruno decide di giocare solo su di un lato. Questa decisione gli garantisce di essere l'unico a poter giocare per vincere, ma da al nero la possibilità di potersi concentrare nel difendere il solo lato di Re  14..

Montepremi: 12.000 euro!! Open e Festival

Riuscirà l'Italia nell'impresa di ottenere due titoli di Grande Maestro in meno di un mese? E' quanto gli sportivi italiani si augurano che possa concretizzarsi nel 1° Torneo Internazionale di Brescia, organizzato dalla Punto Esclamativo a Desenzano del Garda (frazione Rivoltella) dal 6 al 14 giugno, nel quale giocherà Sabino Brunello, cui manca solo una Norma per ottenere l'agognato titolo.

L'evento si preannuncia di grande interesse, vista la presenza nell'elenco dei preiscritti di ben 18 Grandi Maestri (elenco, QUI) tra i quali segnaliamo Pavasovic (Elo 2607) ed i  "miti" Sveshnikov e Romanishin. Qualcuno forse ne conterà 17, ma noi aggiungiamo il grande Daniele Vocaturo, in attesa di formale ratifica! L'organizzazione prevede che alla fine i GM presenti possano essere almeno 20. Saranno presenti anche almeno 12 MI, 7 MF, tra i quali la quasi totalità dei giovani talenti italiani, 2 GMF e 1MFF, ovvero l'attuale Campionessa Italiana Femminile Marina Brunello. Questa rappresentanza qualitativa al torneo fa parte del nuovo impegno preso da parte di Punto Esclamativo con i giovani talenti Italiani, che prevede l'organizzazione nel nostro paese di tornei di elevato tasso tecnico dove possano concorrere per il raggiungimento di norme Internazionali.

Il Torneo si giocherà presso la splendida struttura dell'Hotel Acquaviva del Garda (sito, QUI), che si trova a 1 km di distanza sia da Desenzano che da Sirmione. La struttura è dotata di centro congressi, centro benessere completo di piscina interna riscaldata, piscina scoperta con solarium, spiaggia privata sul lago dotata di piscine idormassaggio. E poco distante dall'hotel anche campi scoperti polifunzionali. Gli impianti saranno a completa disposizione di tutti i partecipanti al Torneo.

La manifestazione prevede la disputa di un Open integrale di 9 turni, dal 6 al 14 giugno, e di Festival interrnazionale di 5 turni, dal 12 al 14 giugno, diviso in 3 fasce Elo (over 2000, da 1500 a 2000, under 1600).
Per garantire la perfetta "vivibilità" di gioco all'interno della struttura, l'organizzazione ammetterà solo 70 partecipanti all'Open integrale e 60 partecipanti al Festival week-end. Chi volesse partecipare all'evento farà bene ad assicurarsi in fretta un posto!

Come sempre nei tornei della Punto Esclamativo verranno utilizzati i seguenti punteggi: 3 punti alla vittoria, 1 punto al pareggio, 0 punti alla sconfitta. Gli abbinamenti verranno effettuati con il sistema svizzero (LIM). Nell'Open integrale verrà utilizzato il sistema accelerato nei primi 3 turni.

• Calendario di gioco. Open integrale: dal 6 al 14 giugno sempre alle ore 14,30. Festival: il 12 giugno alle 19,00, il 13 ed il 14 giugno alle 9,00 ed alle 14,30.

Comenzamos ahora lo que va a ser una larga serie de crónicas históricas para “revivir” el VI Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria que se disputaría desde el 8 al 28 de Mayo de 1977.

La gran estrella invitada al mismo fue el entonces campeón mundial Anatoli Kárpov, que obviamente prestigió al ajedrez canario con su presencia. Tolia dictaría cátedra en aquel torneo actuando en plan Bobby Fischer!.

Pero no adelantemos acontecimientos y vayamos viendo en plan “diario”, lo que pude entonces recopilar en las crónicas deportivas de los principales periódicos canarios (!?).

Necesitaríamos antes que nada reubicar aquí el momento ajedrecístico de aquella época, para realzar la importancia de aquel nuestro “añorado” Gran Torneo:

Después de su no celebrado match ante Bobby Fischer, Anatoli Evgenievich Kárpov había prometido a todos una activa participación en los principales eventos ajedrecísticos del mundo.

Así en Junio de 1975 vencería en su primer torneo internacional tras haber sido proclamado campeón mundial “sin mover un peón”, el torneo de Ljubljana/Portoroz, con victorias ante Portisch, Velimirovic, Barle, Silvino García, Mariotti, Musil y Osterman.

A mediados de Julio de aquel año, Kárpov participaría en la Spartakiada de la URSS con victorias ante Spassky, Grigorian, Kupreichik  y Gurgenidze.

Continuó su racha triunfal venciendo en septiembre de 1975 en el Torneo de Milán (victorias en la fase previa ante Browne, Gligoric, Larsen y Mariotti) donde cosecharía su primera derrota como campeón mundial, ante el GM sueco Ulf Andersson (Ver libro de Kaspárov, titulado “Revolución en los setenta”). En matches individuales posteriores a aquel torneo de liga, empató con Petrosian en semifinales (pasando a la final por mejor coeficiente) y ganó el torneo venciendo a Lajos Portisch.

Llegó seguidamente al Torneo de Skopje de Marzo de 1976, venciendo en el mismo a Uhlmann, Kurajica, Tarjan, Velimirovic, Vaganian, Nicevsky, Sofrevsky, Ivanovic, Georgievsky y Jancev.

En Abril de aquel año, disputaría la Copa de la URSS, venciendo a Anikaev y a Romanishin; para celebrar después un torneo cuadrangular a doble vuelta en Mayo de 1976 en Amsterdam, en donde vencería a Browne y a  Friedrik Olafsson.

En Julio tocaría otro torneo similar, pero esta vez en la “exótica” ciudad de Manila, donde por primera vez quedó relegado al segundo lugar (1º: Eugene Torre, el amigo íntimo de Fischer) que derrotaría a Kárpov en su match particular (!?). Por el contrario, Tolia le ganó a Ljubojevic.

Llegó el mes de Agosto de 1976 y la celebración del llamado “Torneo del Vino”, que se celebró en la localidad española y cordobesa de Montilla Moriles. De nuevo Tolia, retomó el camino del triunfo, venciendo casi sin despeinarse y obteniendo victorias ante Pfleger, Bellón, Díez del Corral, Pomar y ante el canario Fraguela.

A finales de aquel año, obtuvo su primer triunfo en un Campeonato de la URSS que se celebraría en Moscú. Victorias ante Balashov, Dorfman, Gulko, Vaganian, Grigorian, Tseskovsky, Zakharov y Kupreichik y tercera derrota como campeón mundial, ante Efim Geller (!?) - el matagigantes del tablero -.

En Marzo de 1977, Kárpov vencería jugando en gran estilo en Alemania, en Bad Lauterberg, donde finalizó imbatido venciendo a Timman, Sosonko, Liberzon, Csom, Miles, Torre (¡el placer de la venganza!), Hermann, Gerusel y Wockenfuss.

Terminó el torneo y poco antes de viajar a Las Palmas, Kárpov participaría en el Campeonato de Europa de Selecciones Nacionales, donde la URSS sacaría diez puntos y medio de ventaja al segundo clasificado (!!), Hungría y un punto más a Yugoslavia (3º). Allí Tolia jugó en cinco ocasiones y obtuvo el pleno: Victorias ante Smejkal, Ljubojevic, Gheorghiu, Portisch y Keene (!!).

Y por fin bajo esta “estela triunfal” llegaría la disputa de este VI Torneo Internacional de Las Palmas, un categoría X en donde Kárpov sin duda “dictaría cátedra”.

Quienes lo vieron en directo, me contaron sin cesar lo que más les impresionó entonces del gran Anatoli Kárpov: Su gran virtuosismo para jugar rápido y bien, secando a todos sus rivales.

Viajemos ahora pues a través del tiempo, para conocer los entresijos de este gran ¡evento ajedrecístico! que tanto nos ha llenado de orgullo a todos los aficionados canarios.

El tiempo pasa. Pero los grandes eventos culturales permanecerán en la memoria de los “entendidos” para siempre.

Y ahí es donde radica la verdadera fuerza de la cultura(!!).

This week the very strong 2nd edition of the Gedeon Barcza Memorial, with GMs Zoltan Almasi (2685), Ivan Sokolov (2669) and GM Evgeny Postny (2648) as its favorites, was cancelled after the first round, when it became clear that the organizer didn’t have the money to pay the venue nor the players. As one of the participants, IM Robert Ris gives us a personal account of a small nightmare.

The II Gedeon Barcza Memorial was supposed to take place in Budapest 6th-17th April 2009. It was a 12-player round-robin with GM Zoltan Almasi (2685), GM Ivan Sokolov (2669), GM Evgeny Postny (2648), GM Victor Mikhalevski (2625), GM Eduardas Rozentalis (2595), GM Geetha Narayanan Gopal (2572), IM Gabor Papp (2524), IM Marcos Llaneza Vega (2522), IM Peter Prohaszka (2511), GM Oleg Romanishin (2501), IM David Recuero Guerra (2459) and IM Robert Ris (2432).

Although the first round was actually played, it became clear very soon that the main organizer, Gabor Pali, didn’t have any money to pay either the venue or the players. The top GMs were still waiting for their appearance fees and the Ramada Resort Hotel, where the players were staying and where the tournament was held, never received any money from Pali either. On the second day they had to decide to close the playing hall, according to the basic economic rule: “no money, no business”.

As a consequence, twelve chess players have been seriously let down and financially harmed. One of them is IM Robert Ris from The Netherlands, who happens to be one of our co-editors for ChessVibes Openings. With such a fantastic field, it was going to be one of the best tournaments he ever played in, but it ended in a nightmare. Here’s his personal account:

A few months ago I found out that in April 2009 a 2nd edition of the Barcza Memorial would be organized in Budapest. (After reading the story you will understand why there is no tournament site of such strong tournament anymore!). I noticed an email address of the organizer, Gabor Pali, and decided to write him if there would be a possibility for me to participate. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any reply, until two weeks before the tournament was scheduled. His invitation came quite unexpectedly for me, but I was very glad to get the chance to play in a Category 13 tournament, although I had to pay a huge entry fee (€ 600) + flight ticket (€ 320) all myself.

I started my trip on Sunday, April 5th. Due to late booking I couldn’t get a direct flight to Budapest, so I had to make a short transfer in Prague. Arriving there, I decided to check my phone, and saw to my big surprise three missed calls from GM Ivan Sokolov, one of the players in the tournament. I called him immediately and he told me he arrived at the Ramada Resort Hotel (which was also playing venue) and wanted to check-in, but when informing the reception he came for the chess tournament nobody understood what he was talking about. According to the hotel manager, Pali started negotiations a few months ago, but they were stopped early without signing any contract.

Ivan Sokolov informed me that it looked highly unlikely that there would a tournament going to take place, so the best thing I could do, he advised me, was to take a taxi and book a room 1for one night at my own expense.

After off-loading my luggage in Budapest I was surprised that Gabor Pali picked me up. He told me immediately that the first night I couldn’t stay in the hotel, since it was overbooked. After the opening ceremony, where all players but Sokolov were present (Ivan wasn’t even informed about the location) he therefore decided to drop me and a few other players in another hotel for one night and transfer us the next morning.

The next day we checked-out and went to the other hotel. The playing conditions looked really excellent. Everything seemed to be ready for a nice and competitive event.

The 1st round went quite smoothly, despite a slight delay at the beginning of the round.

It seemed that all small problems were more or less solved, but in fact they just started…

Next day, 5 minutes before the start of the 2nd round, Pali arrived in the hotel and announced to the players that the 2nd round would be delayed for one hour, without mentioning any reason. To me all things were quite clear already, since the hotel management even didn’t want to open the conference hall, where we were supposed to play. It was obvious that Pali hadn’t paid anything to the hotel yet.

The players decided to relax in the lobby while Pali went to the bank. Coming back (of course nobody cared about the exact delaying time anymore) he showed some papers to the hotel and sales manager. As I could read from their faces they were absolutely not satisfied what was going on and Pali left again, this time accompanied by the hotel manager. After a while they returned and Pali informed a few players that “today we don’t play, maybe tomorrow double round” while the hotel manager wisely added “maybe tomorrow no games at all”.

When hearing this from other participants I decided to have a serious talk with Pali. I explained him that the situation for me was absolutely unacceptable: paying a huge amount to play this tournament and being treated in such a way. Arguments from his side like that he lost potential sponsors in preparation of the tournament and he suffered from private problems, didn’t convince me at all. Losing sponsors in January and inviting me at the end of March lacks any logic. He simply didn’t fulfill any of his promises we agreed before the tournament and I didn’t see anything better than to withdraw myself from the tournament.

About one hour later the hotel manager informed all players that the organizer had absolutely no money, and so the tournament had to be cancelled. The hotel gave him a few chances by extending the deadline, but as the manager stated correctly: “No money, no business.”

The tournament being cancelled is absolutely a pity, but what about the expenses all the players made? For me personally it means that I lost around € 1000 for playing only one game. Most of the other players only lost their flight ticket and some starting fee. During the first two days GMs Almasi and Sokolov asked Pali many times to pay their starting fee, but every time he found a bad excuse to delay the payment.

I am very curious what was the reason that Pali did all this to us. As the hotel manager explained, Pali had absolutely no money to transfer. He lost some sponsors during the preparation of the tournament, but still the Hungarian Chess Federation sent him some money (I have been told 2.2 million forint which is about € 7300) which he absolutely misused and/or kept for himself.

After all what happened, it was decided to put up a list with all expenses the players made and forced Pali to sign himself. As he couldn’t escape he signed of course, and promised me he would pay me in the morning at the airport. At 07.45 AM I met him together with GMs Gopal and Rozentalis. Pali told me he transferred the money to my account, which was absolutely impossible, since the banks are closed until 8 AM.

I asked him to pay me cash, so we went to the local currency office. His willingness to pay me cash is already enough proof that he did not send the money to my bank account! Coming there he explained us that he didn’t have his card with him, so he couldn’t pay me cash. Similar problems occurred with Gopal and Rozentalis who also didn’t get anything. Coming back home I was really surprised to hear that Pali informed Ivan Sokolov that he partly paid me back! Absolutely a lie!

At last I would really like to thank the Ignacz family, who showed great hospitality inviting me to stay with them, after being kicked out of the hotel. They did an excellent job by taking care of several chess players and helping to put up the list of expenses.

I would kindly ask FIDE and the Hungarian Chess Federation to take appropriate measures against Gabor Pali so that he will be unable to organize any chess events in the future.

GM Evgeny Postny already played in a tournament that was organized by Gabor Pali, and knew that the man wasn’t the most reliable organizer around. However, Postny decided to “give him another chance”. The Israeli grandmaster was happy to share with ChessVibes his experience with Pali:

I personally already played in his tournament in 2004 (category 9), also Sergey Erenburg played there, and the tournament was running more or less smoothly, even though we were running after Gabor Pali every day to get our appearence fees untill the end of last round.

So, I personally knew that this organizer is not reliable, but I still decided to give him a chance, as I didn’t find any other event to play in April, and also I’ve been many times in Budapest before, and enjoy the city quite much.

Last year in October, he organised 1st Barcza Memorial, and the tournament went okay, Romanishin told us that he paid everything at that tourney. But, it appeared that this time the guy has no money at all. He didn’t book the hotel in advance (the superb Ramada resort hotel) on the north edge of Budapest Pest side. He took all the receipts from all participants (flights, taxis, some other) and promised to give money later.

In the hotel he also promised something, told bullshit about the sponsor, but at the day of the 2nd round the chief hotel manager urged him to pay immediately. By the way, the hotel offered him a huge discount, but he didn’t pay either. His credit card has 0 Forints on it - we checked in the bank. We were at his flat, he called some friends, relatives, nobody wants to give him money.

This kind of situation is impossible to figure out for a “normal” person. It is impossible, at least for me, to understand his logic. He paid nothing, didn’t get any money from the sponsor, and didn’t ran out of the city. He is going nowhere, just says that he will pay at that date, that hour, that sum to that person, and all lies of course.

Every chess player grows up learning combinations that work. As a kid, you learn to ’spot the combo’ quickly and you’re told that you will profit from this knowledge ever after. There’s hundreds of books that are written according to this method. But in real life, sadly, combinations often do not work at all. Where are the books written about this phenomenon? Now, we have one.

A friend of mine is doing research on pattern recognition in chess. His team of the University of Amsterdam has developed a test that basically asks players to ‘find the best move’ in a number of increasingly difficult positions. Many of these positions are (derived from) famous combinations and motifs from historical games. Of course, most strong players have no trouble finding these combinations within seconds. No surprise there. But I’ve often wondered what would happen if the test included positions that only looked like famous combinations, but were in fact slightly different positions where the well-known combo does not win at all. Would the top players spot the difference?

In my opinion, the book Kasparov: How his predecessors misled him about chess by Tibor Karolyi and Nick Aplin is based on this idea: chess combinations and motifs don’t always work out well. But the book is much more: it’s a good joke - albeit a joke with a moral. Finally, it’s very serious book about important chess themes. The authors explain how they got the idea in the preface:

After writing two books on Kasparov’s astonishing career [...] we realised that there were similarities between Garry’s games and some of his predecessors - and this opened the door for a little bit of friendly leg-pulling! [...] The temptation is also there to look at some of Kasparov’s losses - which are in fact well worth analysing.

The rest of the book is a virtual monologue by Garry Kasparov about how ideas of his World Champion predecessors are to blame for his losses. A 270 page joke - isn’t that a bit corny? Well, perhaps, but as I said, the joke has a moral that’s so important, it’s worth reading the book even if you happen to think the joke has become boring.

Here’s a position from one of my own games. OK, I played it when I was still young, but it sure doesn’t excuse the following:

What the hell was that all about? Well, it’s not that I didn’t see my rook was hanging on a8… I was simply under the illusion that I was following in the footsteps of my hero Kasparov! Sacrifice the rook and deliver mate on the kingside… just as in the following game, played a few months before:

You may laugh now, but I hope you get the point. Karolyi and Aplin’s book is about this kind of mistakes - or should we say misunderstandings? So let’s move on to some more sophisticated examples from Kasparov: How his predecessors misled him about chess.

This must be one of Petrosian’s most famous diagrams. As ‘Kasparov’ notes in the book, Petrosian was known for his exchange sacrifices. Here he played the fantastic

25…Re6!! The authors explain: ‘Black blocks the e6-thrust, and at the same time Petrosian clears the e7-square’. A truly inspiring move indeed! But - and here’s the moral - not all positional exchange sacrifices are correct: not even when they’re played by Kasparov himself. Have you ever noticed how most textbooks fail to mention this tiny detail? Take this position:

“I got excited when I read about exchange sacrifices in a chapter in Petrosian’s book. What advantages does Black accrue with this exchange? The position is closed so the rooks do not work well. In addition the c5-square is firmly under Black’s control and he has an outside passed pawn. I did not pay attention to the interesting fact that Petrosian himself had opted for this position [with White].”

The authors go on to show in great detail that the sacrifice is not entirely correct. Their point is not to make fun of Kasparov or even to elaborate on the joke, but to show that you should not just follow blindly what others have done before. I guess ’standing on the shoulders of giants’ is not always the right strategy - sometimes, it makes you fall on the ground. This point - even though in Kasparov’s case, it’s mostly fictional! - completely overshadows any thoughts we might have about the ‘joke’ of this book. It is full of wonderful games and positions, often from lesser known games by Kasparov or his predecessors, illustrating themes that you won’t find so often in textbooks. Here a few examples:

• When to undermine the Maroczy setup with b6-b5 (Aaron-Fischer, Stockholm 1962 and Romanishin-Kasparov, Moscow 1981)
• The advantages and disadvantages of doubled f-pawns (Gurgenidze-Petrosian, USSR 1967 and Cheskovsky-Kasparov, Tbilisi 1978)
• The power of a queenside majority with a White pawn on c5 (Smyslov-Schmidt, Warsaw 1980 and Kasparov-Yermolinsky, Vilnius 1975)
• Taking the central e5-pawn in typical Sicilians:

Of course, not all examples are equally good. And especially towards the end, the authors seem to have run a bit out of inspiration. It’s obvious to me that Karolyi, who has trained Peter Leko and Judit Polgar and has in fact worked with Kasparov himself, knows most about the recent world champions. Still, these are minor trifles, and Karolyi and Aplin have the highest respect for Kasparov, as becomes clear in the - rather surprising - last chapter.

Kasparov: How his predecessors misled him about chess is a funny, useful and unique book about Kasparov (as you’ve never seen him!), about his predecessors and about how things are not always what they appear to be. The book definitely deserves a place among the most serious study books. Its message will long outlive its joke.

Clear winners in all 3 Corus Groups

In a sensational last-round fight at Corus, all three main groups were won by youngsters: Ukrainian Sergey Karjakin (who just turned 19) ended clear first in Group A after another tough opposite-castlings fight against Leinier Dominguez. In Group B, young Italian top player Fabio Caruana (16) profited from some rare kind of self-destructiveness by good old Nigel Short and finished clear first as well. Wesley So (15) from the Phillipines reigned supreme in Group C, finishing a point ahead of Anish Giri (14) and Tiger Hillarp Persson. For now the games, results and final standings, later more.
