The Total Chess Library

Piranesi - Carceri XIVBeing a database programmer, perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised when I recently dreamt I had to develop a chess database. But it wasn’t an ordinary chess database.

Carceri XIV – Giovanni Battista Piranesi

I was told by a faceless person to make a chess database of all chess games ever played. If that doesn’t sound like much, it’s because that was not all. The man told me it must also contain all chess analyses ever made, as well as every comment, opinion or text ever written about any move. It would be a database of all existing chess knowledge -an endless chess library. It was like making the chess version of Jorge Luis Borges’ Total Library. The ultimate Mega Database – an entire chess universe.

I started by collecting all existing chess books ever written – both ancient manuscripts and newly printed books. I visited all chess libraries in the world and went through all privately owned chess book collections. But this clearly wasn’t enough. I had to visit every chess player in person to ask for any scoresheets of games that they had in their possession. Then, I went through all local club magazines and internet blogs to find games I missed. This reminded me that I had to get all chess magazines as well. And, of course, I downloaded all digital books, DVD’s, game analyses and instruction guides on chess.

When I had rubricized all material and put it in a more or less logical order, I started thinking about how to put everything in a database. It didn’t take me long to realize I wouldn’t be able to use existing chess database software. It would just be too impractical. For 1.e4 alone, hundreds if not thousands of comments somehow had to be entered in the database, and this can’t be done with a regular database program. While it is possible to add comments in different languages in some software, you can’t add comments by different sources – at least not dynamically.

So I started thinking about how to develop this chess database myself. Basically it had to contain many more dimensions than the current ones – in fact, it had to have an infinite amount of possible entries for comments and analyses. All published praise of 47…Bh3!! and 23…Qg3!! had to be entered into the database somehow. Actually, it should also be possible to add multiple annotation symbols, because perhaps some commentators had awarded these moves not with two, but only with one exclamation mark (a grave sin, I must say). The database design must take this into account as well.

With the help of data warehouse design techniques, I was able to establish which dimensions my database should have. Obviously there should be dimensions with information about the sources (the books themselves), and information related to the games, or game fragments. This could be players’ names, the year in which it was played, where it was played, and so on. The moves and sub variations (including move number, to keep track of things) should be stored in a different dimension (or, in its technical term, a ‘fact table’). Any game, including its sub-lines, could develop like a garden of forking paths, leading to an infinite amount of moves.

Database

'Datavault' model of a data warehouse

The same was obviously true of comments. But there was an additional problem: comments could not only be related to moves, but also to people who had written them. in his books, Kasparov often refers to older authors, for example. At this point in my dream, my faceless principal interrupted my musings. He ordered me to also store all information about the people who had written the annotations: what use would the project otherwise be? This implied I had to include all biographies of chess commentators in my database. And of course, the commentators could also be chess players themselves, so they should also be linked back to the players and games dimensions.

When I had finished my design – or at least thought I had – a long-feared question arose in my head: where to start? Which data should be put into the database first? Would it be wise to work ‘backwards’ in time, starting with the most recent chess books and adding entries in the database for every name, move or comment that returned a blank? Wouldn’t it be wiser to start with the first chess manuscripts – the recent reconstruction of Francesch Vicent’s mysterious treatise, the surviving games of Ruy Lopez, or perhaps even the first ancient Arab chess problems?

In the end, I decided it wouldn’t really matter – it was a Sisyphus job in any case – and so I started with a game collection from 2010. It happened to be a new book on Capablanca. Slowly but steadily I worked my way back. Then I realized I had forgotten something crucial. Within comments, there could also be references to other works – references to database entries that didn’t exist in my digital library yet! I was suddenly faced with what is sometimes called ‘orphans’ – database references that can’t be traced back (anymore) to their primary dimension. In order to proceed, I had to put all titles in the system first. And so I started again.

My success didn’t last long. I soon found out that many chess authors use references to non-chess related literature all the time. Kasparov quotes Ilf & Petrov, Donner quotes Nietzsche. Once you start paying attention to it, chess and literature are completely intertwined. To be complete, the entire world literature should be included in the list as well. And that’s only the beginning of a myriad of problems. For instance, how to deal with references to literature that has been lost over the centuries?

I now realized the entire Total Chess Library idea would be quite pointless without having access to each and every chess book ever written; every game or analysis – including those that have been destroyed, mutilated, lost for good. I was trapped in a labyrinth I had created myself.

Then I woke up, of course. While I cycled to work, I thought about what use such a megalomanic project could be. Nobody would ever be able to use this monstrous database. The information would be sitting there in some kind of super computer without anyone ever touching it. At first I felt anger, then sadness. Then I felt like nothing had really changed. It was just like work.

As I switched on my laptop at work and opened the data warehouse environment I was currently working on, I remembered the words from another Borges story, The Library of Babel:

At that time it was also hoped that a clarification of humanity’s basic mysteries — the origin of the Library and of time — might be found. It is verisimilar that these grave mysteries could be explained in words: if the language of philosophers is not sufficient, the multiform Library will have produced the unprecedented language required, with its vocabularies and grammars.

For four centuries now men have exhausted the hexagons … There are official searchers, inquisitors. I have seen them in the performance of their function: they always arrive extremely tired from their journeys; they speak of a broken stairway which almost killed them; they talk with the librarian of galleries and stairs; sometimes they pick up the nearest volume and leaf through it, looking for infamous words.

Obviously, no one expects to discover anything.

Scooping up free engines
One of the slight drawbacks of using a netbook computer is the lack of a CD/DVD drive. I can normally get around this by using the DVD drive on my desktop machine and sharing it across my home network, but this only goes so far. For example I can install my copy of Fritz 9 on my netbook, but I can't actually run it. When I fire up the engine it asks me to insert the engine disk (ie installation CD) but then does not look at the correct drive on my computer.
Fortunately there are a couple of free engines that are both stronger than Fritz, and far easier to install. Fruit, which was initially open source, then closed source, is now back to open source. Although the original developer, Fabien Letouzey,is no longer working on the program, others are, and it is still a very strong program. It can be downloaded from www.fruitchess.com
Stockfish is the other program I am using. It is also open source, and was the main analysis engine used by Chessdom for their recent World Championship coverage. It was based on the Glaurung program (free for Ipod Touch users btw) and is comparable in strength to Rybka. You can download it from www.stockfishchess.com
I've added both engines to my Fritz installation, and am now employing both to do the job of annotating games I am too lazy to annotate myself!

Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine (documental)

Topalov tougher than Kramnik

Topalov tougher than Kramnik: Surya Sekhar Ganguly
Archiman Bhaduri, TNN, May 17, 2010, 12.00am IST

KOLKATA: It was a journey that began with the Lord of the Rings and ended with the Master being crowned Lord of the 64 Squares. Yet again.

Surya Sekhar Ganguly, one of Viswanathan Anand’s four seconds during his World Championship match against Veselin Topalov in Sofia, described the win as "one of the greatest in Anand’s career".

The start was anything but ideal. A volcanic eruption in Iceland just days before the start of the world championship forced the cancellation of Team Anand’s flight from Frankfurt to Sofia. They had no option but to undertake a 40-hour long drive and reached the venue just a day before the scheduled start of the 12-game series. Anand requested FIDE for a three-day postponement, but was granted just a day’s grace.

"No doubt it was a tiring journey, through five countries," Ganguly, who returned home in the wee hours of Sunday, told TOI. "We discussed chess and relaxed by watching Lord of the Rings on the DVD in our car," he said.

Ganguly, who was one of Anand’s seconds during his previous world championship match against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008 as well, felt it was much more challenging for them this time. "While Kramnik is a very strategic type of player, Topalov is very aggressive and has a lot of variety," Ganguly said. Anand’s team, which started working some eight months back, concentrated on good opening. "Topalov never wants to settle for a draw. Hence the matches were much more long-drawn this time, taking a toll on both the players," Grandmaster Ganguly said.

Team Anand, Ganguly revealed, had planned to play for a draw in the last game. "We planned that way since Anand was playing with black. We were satisfied with the opening and when we found the position was almost equal, we decided to take a quick nap to be fresh for the tie-breakers. But when we woke up, it was a different story," Ganguly said.

Topalov, trying to push for a win to avoid tie-breaker, ultimately ended up losing the game and helped Anand retain the title. Overall, it was another learning experience for Ganguly. "Anand began badly losing the first match, but he made a quick comeback and put Topalov under pressure," he said.

Smith-Morra Gambit Bibliography
When I first developed an opening repertoire in my teens, I got most of my information from the old Chess Digest pamphlets of Ken Smith and John Hall.  The Smith-Morra Gambit (1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 3.c3) thus naturally became my answer to the Sicilian.  The gambit was first analyzed by the obscure French player Pierre Morra (1900-1969) in the 1940s and 50s (generally via the move order 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.c3), but it was the American poker champion, chess publisher, and gambiteer FM Ken "Top Hat" Smith (1930-1999) who became its chief proponent, gambling on it even against top notch competition at San Antonio 1972

It has been many years since I took the Smith-Morra seriously.  But, as I rarely play much "serious" chess these days, I have begun toying around with it quite a bit.  As I wrote in The Smith-Morra Gambit's Siren Call, it's tough to resist the pleasures afforded by the line, as it promises a wide open board with plenty of active piece play and tactics.   Recent analysis (most notably in The Modern Morra Gambit by Hannes Langrock) suggests that there is no completely clear way for Black to refute it and many ways to go wrong, so even some titled players have added it to their repertoires, and most of their opponents continue to choose the safer course of declining the gambit (generally with 3...Nf6, which transposes directly to the Alapin Sicilian, saving study time).  Ultimately, the Smith-Morra is still a fun line to play at the amateur level and one that guarantees many quick victories with only some risk against the most well-prepared opponents.

IM Marc Esserman is one rising star who regularly plays the Smith-Morra Gambit, and he will be giving a lecture on it at the Kenilworth Chess Club on April 15, 2010 ("Tax Day") at 8:15 p.m.  The lecture is open to the public and admission is $10.

To get us thinking about his lecture, I have prepared a bibliography to whet your appetite, with a number of recent and forthcoming works of interest in both the Smith-Morra Accepted and Smith-Morra Declined (or Alapin).  Everything is listed in reverse chronology, as best I can offer (difficult with web sources), with links to preview, purchase or download items available via the internet.  I have generally left off all but the most influential Black repertoire books that offer only a game or chapter on the gambit, as well as opening encyclopedias which may only mention it in a line or two of analysis.  As always, I welcome reader corrections and additions. And I will be adding some more materials myself (especially videos) over the next couple of days.

I would like to give special thanks to Michel Barbaut, who shared a wonderful bibliography with me and a very rare picture of Pierre Morra that appeared with an article in a French magazine.

Smith-Morra Accepted

Boris Alterman, The Alterman Gambit Guide: White Gambits (Quality Chess 2010)
Just released, this book seems similar in design to Nigel Davies's Gambiteer (which, surprisingly, did not feature the Smith-Morra but instead the Wing Gambit against the Sicilian).  Alterman did some great videos for ICC, and his breezy style seems to translate well to print based on the excerpt available online and other materials at his blog.  The book is clearly pitched to low-rated amateurs or beginning players, with move-by-move explanations but not necessarily very complete or deep analysis.  It covers the Danish Gambit, Urusov Gambit, Philidor, Cochrane Gambit vs the Petroff, Morphy Attack (Fried Liver?), Max Lange, Evans Gambit, Panov Attack, Morra, and Milner-Barry Gambit.  Red meat for the mad dog.

TheChessWebsite, Chess Openings - Smith Morra Gambit (2010)
A good video for amateurs, introducing the Smith-Morra gambit and quickly reviewing main lines.

Michael Goeller, Youthful Smith-Morras and The Smith-Morra Gambit's Siren Call (2009) Some games with the Smith-Morra from when I was a kid and a lengthy meditation on whether or not to play the gambit.

GambitFan, Smith-Morra Gambit All at Chessgames.com
A way to learn the Smith-Morra is to play over a bunch of games online, and this link offers you a quick and easy way to do so.  See also his collections on the Smith-Morra Gambit with ...e5?! and the Alapin Variation (or Smith-Morra Declined).

Jeremy Silman, Smith-Morra Gambit (Chess.com 2009)

John Emms, Starting Out: The Sicilian 2nd edition (Everyman Chess 2009)

Efstratios Grivas, "A Black Repertoire  against the Morra and Grand Prix." NIC Yearbook 88 (2008).  Recommends the line with Nc6, e6, Bb4, and Nge7 as about equal.

Smith-Morra Gambit: Chess Openings on Demand (2008)
An interesting use of blogger to post a complete Smith-Morra repertoire in text format.

Mark Ginsburg, Defending the Smith-Morra (2008)
IM Ginsburg regularly turns up his nose at gambits and this article (written in apparent anger at only drawing IM Mark Esserman in the line) is no exception.  His recommendations are similar to Tim Taylor's (see below), and both seem inspired by Smith - Evans, San Antonio 1972.  Also available in html format.

Gary Lane, Bliss (Opening Lanes #118, ChessCafe 2008)
Annotates the game Cor van Wijgerden-Oscar Panno Amsterdam 1980 which featured the defense Nc6, e6, Bb4, Nge7.

Boris Alterman, Chess Lessons Blog: Morra Gambit (2008)
Several blog entries directed at beginners and amateurs -- and likely the basis for his recent book.

Boris Schipkov, The Siberian Trap (Chess Siberia 2008)
Annotates Kolenbeck - Schipkov, 1987, which may well be the stem game of the "Siberian Trap."

Alex Lenderman, Smith Morra Gambit, Part 1 (free), Part 2, and Part 3
(Internet Chess Club, 2007-2008). Part 1 is available free of charge, but Parts 2 and 3 require membership to ICC to login and view.

Ecspade, Smith Morra Gambit, Part One and Part Two (2007)
A useful video for amateurs by a 1400 player.

Richard Palliser, Fighting the Anti-Sicilians: Combating 2 C3, the Closed, the Morra  (Everyman Chess 2007)
This is a useful book for any Sicilian player who favors e6 or Classical structures, as Palliser's recommendations against the anti-Sicilians favor French set-ups and generally ignore problems faced by the d6 player (even skipping coverage of the Moscow Variation entirely).  Palliser offers two antidotes to the Morra: the first, playing Nc6, d6 and a6, heading for a game like Smith - Evans, San Antonio 1972 (as recommended by Tim Taylor); the second, to play e6, a6, b5, and Bb7 followed by d6, Be7, Nbd7, Ngf6 etc.

Jonathan Rowson, Andrew Martin, Gary Lane, Smith-Morra Gambit (B21)  (Chess Publishing 2007)

Tim Harding, "Has the Smith-Morra Gambit Been Revived?" (Kibitzer #134, ChessCafe 2007)
Harding reviews Langrock's book (see below) and provides a very useful overview of the current state of Smith-Morra theory.

Roger Coathup, The Smith-Morra Gambit: The Siberian Trap (Chess Tales Blog 2007)

Hannes Langrock, The Modern Morra Gambit: A Dynamic Weapon against the Sicilian (Russell Enterprises 2006)
This is currently the essential book if you want to play the Smith-Morra.  I think it is very objective and also very well presented.  It also tries to explain alternatives and not simply focus on the recommended lines.  Reviews by Jeremy Silman, John Donaldson, Carsten Hansen and John Watson (among others) universally offer praise for Langrock's "labor of love" even if they disparage the opening itself.

Gérard Demuydt, Lutter contre le Gambit Morra, Part One and Part Two

Tim McGrew,  "The Power of Ideas" (Gambit Cartel #27, Chess Cafe 2004)
McGrew tells the story of a game where young Pete opens with the Smith-Morra Gambit, describing his thoughts and emotions before, during, and after the course of play. It is really a ground-breaking piece of chess writing which manages to both instruct and entertain, while it also offers a rather convincing defense of playing gambits to develop tactical awareness.

Tim McGrew,   "A Little Learning" (Gambit Cartel #20, Chess Cafe 2004)
The first "Peter Story," where Pete's chess instructor tries to convince him to ignore the database statistics and stick with the Smith-Morra Gambit, because if you look at the games where White loses you quickly see that he was just a complete putz.

Bob Ciaffone and Ben Finegold, Smith-Morra Gambit, Finegold Defense (Gameplayer 2000)
A pamphlet with some good ideas but poorly presented for usability, with much more prose than analysis.  I assume it is more the work of Life Master Ciaffone than now-GM Finegold, though I know Finegold has used this line (in a game I will analyze here).  This was reviewed by John Watson (see also here) rather favorably, even while he critiqued all of the analysis he examined while still bowing to anti-Morra prejudice -- noting, after showing that White is doing well against some of their lines: "Of course, by normal development, I'm sure that Black is still better (this IS the Smith-Morra, after all)."  GambitChess has posted a database book in PGN.

The Smith-Morra Declined (Alapin / c3 Sicilian)
The main advantage of the Smith-Morra Gambit is that while Black can transpose to lines of the standard c3 Sicilian, the defender's choices are more limited because the pawn capture cxd4 has already been played.  This is not intended as a complete list, and  I have included only sources from the last 15 years.

Goodwill Chess by Martha Fierro

Hello everybody!

As I announced in February, March 2010 is a special goodwill events month initiated by the FIDE Commission for Women's Chess, which I co-chair.

The Secretary of the Women's Commission Martha Fierro has given goodwill simuls and events in Puerto Rico and Ecuador and is right now in Detroit for the final goodwill simuls of this month. The FIDE Commission for Women's Chess supported these events by donating free chess books and DVD's to each participant.

Here is the link to the article about the simul in Detroit that has been published a few days ago.

Below you will find the info in Spanish about Marta's visit to Guyanabo, Puerto Rico.

Travelling travails of the World Champion

Travelling from Frankfurt to SofiaFive countries, 2000 kilometres, about a million potholes, an unexpected ferry and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. A member of the Anand team wrote a report of a crazy roadtrip through Europe.

The following report describes the travelling of the Anand team from Frankfurt to Sofia, from Sunday to Tuesday. It was written by a member of the team, and was also published at Chessbase and the All India Chess Federation. The author allowed us to reproduce the following, remarkable story.

Months of careful planning for the chess world championship in Sofia by the Anand team were disrupted by a volcano in Iceland, located under Eyjafjallajökull, one of the smaller glaciers of the North Atlantic island. Tens of thousands of people were stranded on airports in Europe. One of them was Viswanathan Anand, who had travelled with his wife and manager Aruna from Madrid to Frankfurt on Thursday April 15th. They planned to continue their journey to Sofia on Friday April 16, together with three other travellers. Two more seconds were to fly from other airports in Europe to the Bulgarian capital on Friday to join the team there.

Travelling from Frankfurt to Sofia

On Thursday April 15, Hans-Walter Schmitt and another helper of the Anand team flew to Sofia to prepare the arrival of the team Friday. The plan was good and well thought through. But then, on Friday, the bad news was that the ash cloud from Iceland had reached Frankfurt Airport and the airport had to be closed at 09.00 a.m. This meant that the planned flight to Sofia, LH3484, which was scheduled to depart at 10.05 a.m., was cancelled, just like hundreds of other flights. It was quite unclear how long the airport would remain closed, therefore Aruna Anand and the team decided to rebook for the evening flight, LH3488, which was scheduled for 19.45 p.m.

Anand’s baggage was checked through to Sofia. Since it was not clear, however, if the evening flight would depart on time, or depart at all, Aruna thought that it wise to collect the checked-through baggage from Madrid, just to have everything under control in case of another cancellation. She was in close contact with Lufthansa, who were very cooperative, and picked up the baggage herself on Friday afternoon. You should know that finding four pieces of luggage in a major airport like Frankfurt is not an easy task, especially when there are heavy disruptions. Only in case of an emergency, e.g. if somebody has life-saving medicine in his suitcase, an airline is willing to make baggage available for the passenger.

Travelling from Frankfurt to Sofia

After solving this problem, it soon became clear that the evening flight to Sofia would not depart as well, since Frankfurt airport would be closed until Saturday morning at 02:00 a.m. Once again the tickets were rebooked, and despite a long waiting list, Anand and his team were accepted and even got boarding passes for the first flight on Saturday, April 17, LH3484, at 10.05 a.m. However, on Friday, when it became clear that the situation at all major airport was becoming more and more critical, Aruna Anand and her team had already started searching for alternatives. Plans were made to travel to Vienna, which had one of the airports that was still open at that time, to get a flight from there. However, Vienna also closed down on Friday evening.

Aruna began to study other train schedules in detail, but it soon became clear that everything was booked out and it was absolutely impossible to get a ticket. Team Anand also had to bear in mind, that travelling to Sofia by a land route was also problematic, since not every country on the way would accept transit travellers from India without a valid visa! The shortest route is via Serbia, for that Anand and his wife would need a visa, which was impossible to at such a short notice.

Travelling from Frankfurt to Sofia

There were some very generous offers from Anand supporters, who wanted to help get the world champion and his team to Sofia as quickly as possible. Wolfgang Grenke, one of the main sponsors of the Chess Classic, and sponsor of the Bundesliga team Baden Baden, in which Anand plays, offered Anand the use of his private jet. However, German authorities could not give him permission to fly, since the airspace in Germany was now completely blocked. Even German chancellor Angela Merkel had to take an overland route when she arrived from San Francisco on Friday and was not allowed to enter German airspace.

On Saturday, after another cancellation of all flights from Frankfurt and other airports in Germany, including all flights to Sofia, it became obvious that there was only one final possibility to reach Sofia: by car. However, most car rentals, taxi companies and other VIP services simply had no cars and staff available, while companies that did simply refused to drive all the way to Bulgaria. Finally, after many hours of trying, team Anand managed to find a VIP service by Taxi Lagerberg, located in Amstelveen, The Netherlands. They contacted two of their best drivers, Paul Oostheim and Peer Reintjes, on Saturday, and asked them to stop their shift immediately, in order to be able to drive to Bad Soden on Sunday. This is 500 kilometres from Amstelveen, a five hour drive.

In the meantime, two more seconds of Anand arrived, very late on Saturday, in Bad Soden to join the team. They had originally intended to fly to Sofia on Friday, but after the closure of the airspace, they had redirected to Bad Soden. To do so they had to travel more than twelve hours by train on Saturday, coming from different countries. But they made it somehow – what other choice did they have?

On Sunday morning, at 11:00 a.m., the Mercedes Sprinter, equipped with all kinds of amenities like a fridge, two TV screens and a DVD player, arrived in Bad Soden and after picking up the team in the hotel, the journey started at 11.28h. The drivers had prepared the route for Sunday: we would cross the Germany border in Passau, drive through Austria and continue to Budapest, to spend the night there. That was a 1000 kilometre trip, and after a smooth drive with a lot of sunshine the team arrived in Budapest at 22.30 p.m. Bear in mind that the drivers had started their trip in Amstelveen at 06.00 a.m.

Travelling from Frankfurt to Sofia

On Monday, the journey continued at 08.00 a.m. with a morning traffic jam in Budapest. But the drivers managed to get the team out of the city pretty fast, and the drive to Szeged was easy, despite the heavy rain. The Rumanian border was reached at 13.30 p.m. The team had to transfer to Bulgaria via Rumania, because this country will accept Indian passports without a visa. The border was crossed near Arad, the federal border police recognised Anand. After crossing the border we started to watch the first film of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, the extended version to be precise.

We had to drive 480 km through Rumania to the city of Vidin at the Bulgarian border. If you use Google Maps you may find it a bit strange that we had to reckon with 9-10 hours for this fairly short distance. But when you actually have to drive this route you understand why it takes so long: there are numerous construction zones, about every ten kilometres, dead dogs and cats on the road have to be avoided, and there are about a million potholes. To make the situation even more difficult for the drivers it was raining continuously – a miracle that the car survived these extremely bad road conditions. Even the two very experienced drivers had never seen such bad roads.

In the car however, the atmosphere was very good, there was food and drink, and the second “Lord of the Rings” film, “The Two Towers”, helped us pass the time. After more than twelve hours driving through Romania, at 22.35h, we finally reached Calafat in Romania to cross the border to Bulgaria. That was when we saw a long queue and a ferry, and it dawned upon the passengers that there is no bridge across the river “Romania” and we would have to use the ferry. That meant waiting until enough cars had arrived for the ferry to cross the river. After over an hour, just before midnight, the ferry started, and twenty minutes later, on 20 April at 12:05 a.m., Anand finally reached Bulgarian territory. One of the Bulgarian border officers checked the passports in the bus. When he read “Anand” aloud he realized that he was checking the passport of the chess world champion and started laughing: “Ah, Anand!“ Without any further checks we were allowed to pass.

Travelling from Frankfurt to Sofia

Only 250 km left to Sofia, with about four more hours to go, but the story is not completely over. In the meantime, the last part of the Ring-trilogy, “The Return of the King”, was running in our Sprinter DVD, and we were confident that we would reach Sofia at about 04.00 a.m. that night. And, dear readers, when the streets are empty, when you have driven 36 hours and your destination is within reach, you want to get there as quickly as possible. With only 100 km to go, at 02.15 a.m. on Tuesday morning, April 20, the Bulgarian police noticed a dark Mercedes Sprinter with a Dutch license plate, driving a just a little too fast. You guessed right: we had to stop and the driver had to explain why he was speeding (74 km instead of the allowed 50) – and what he was doing in Bulgaria. However, when the driver told the very friendly police officer that Vishy Anand and his team were on board, the officer smiled and said: “Ok, take him to Sofia, but not too fast, ok?!“

Without a fine we continued the last leg of the journey to Sofia, although we were stopped again by the police, this time just for a routine traffic check. Finally, at 05.30 a.m. after travelling for more than 40 hours, we arrived at our destination – just in time to have an early breakfast. There was only one problem: we arrived at the Hilton Sofia still a little too early and had missed the last hour of “The Return of the King“. We will have to watch that on our way home…

Why we love this game
"The Magic of Chess Tactics" is a unique collection of positions and game fragments by German trainer Claus Dieter Meyer. Late last year it was released along with GM Karsten Müller as a DVD with more than three hours of video presentation. Louis Lima from chesscafe.com thoroughly tested it and found a new favourite among his Fritz Trainer DVDs. Buy it now or read his review.

Major award and recognition for "Learn Chess in 30 minutes" DVD

Congratulations Chess DVDS! You have won the PTPA Seal of Approval which means your Learn Chess in 30 minutes has earned the recognition of being Parent Tested and Parent Approved! www.ptpamedia.com

This is a major mainstream award and recognition for this best-selling DVD!

Panel of Parents comments

Q1 Was this DVD enjoyable for you and your child to watch?

I used this DVD to teach my class of 13 year old students about Chess. Out of my 8 students I would say 6 of them really enjoyed the DVD and were very interested as they all wanted to learn how to play Chess.

Yes, it was enjoyable to watch. We especially liked the cartoon King and horse.

It was more enjoyable for me, I know nothing about chess and I wanted to learn. My daughter has played chess before so she did lose some interest in the DVD. I played the DVD for my niece and nephew and they were very interested as was I.

Q2 Did this DVD teach you the beginner basic chess knowledge?

Yes, yes, yes, we learned a lot

I feel that it was really helpful in teaching them the basic skills of Chess. We set up our Chess set and set up teams to play and it was a ton of fun.

Yes. Both my 8 year old son and myself only knew a VERY little about chess before. Now we at least know how all the pieces move, how to set up a chess board, etc.

I do feel that we learned about the chess board and a lot about the chess pieces (I knew nothing about chess so It did really help).

Q3 Is this DVD priced fairly?

Yes great price and you actually learn how to play Chess!

I do think that the price if a fair price. For the knowledge that you get it is definitely worth it!

Q4 The quality of the DVD met your requirements?

Yes - it is high quality and well presented as well.

I think that the quality was very good. Very professionally done

Q5 Do you feel this DVD taught the basics of Chess in a fun and entertaining way? Did it keep your child's interest?

We had a tough crowd to test this on, 13 year olds can lose interest quickly. We had discussed a segment on learning Chess and I was happy to see how quickly most caught on. After we set up our chess board we referred to the DVD and have now set up a weekly Friday chess game instead of watching a movie.

My girls enjoyed the animation, we all enjoyed the information shared in the DVD.

Yes, it was fun and entertaining. The quizzes at the end of each chapter is a great idea. This DVD taught us the basics very easily. The cartoon characters were fun and even some of the possible answers

I do feel that the DVD did teach us the basics of chess and I found it fun and entertaining. My kids did not stay interested in the entire DVD but my niece and nephew were more interested as they had no idea how to play chess.

Q6 Would you recommend this product to friends or family?

Yes - for anyone who expresses interest in learning Chess

Yes, I would recommend this to family and friends. It is a great beginning to learn Chess. It is great to learn all the pieces and the moves by seeing the pieces on the board and seeing the highlighted areas that they can move.

Q7 The product met your expectations.

Ya bet you. It kept the students attention and taught them the skills they need to play chess. (helped to refresh my chess skills as well, cheers to that)

Yes we all learned most of the basics. Me and my husband the most! My girls are well on their way. The beauty of having the DVD is we can keep referring to it as we learn as a family.

Yes. My son and I have been very eager to learn how to play chess. Using this DVD, we learned the names of all the pieces, how to set up a chess board, some special moves, etc.

It did meet my expectations, it was very informative and was taught on a great beginner level, which I am.

Q8 What did you like best about this product?

The format was well done, very thorough without being boring. Having the chess board which shows each piece movement is key especially when teaching kids who have never played.

The amount of time it took to learn, and the animation quality. I was not expecting the girls and I to learn so much in such a short time.

The cartoonish characters of the King and Champion (horse). They were cute and funny and fun to watch and listen to.

I loved the quizzes at the end of the chapters. I also love how in the beginning it shows the chess board and highlights the moves that the chess pieces can move. I love the visuals. I also liked the chess piece characters helping out.

I run an aftercare program in our school for grade 5 through 8 graders. I am going to take this DVD for the kids that want to learn chess. I think that they will enjoy it. Thanks

From Anand - Kosteniuk

Anand - Kosteniuk, Black to play

Hello everybody!

In the weekly chess article by Grandmaster Helmut Pfleger in the great German newspaper Die Zeit, the above position is given, from my game of the 2009 world blitz championship against the world chess champion Vishy Anand.

In this position I'm up in material and with little time on the clock, I wanted to secure a win and put make a little trap, so I played 1...Rad8, since if white plays 2.Rdxe4? I can play Qxe4! 3. Rxe4 Rd1+ with mate to follow. Anand played something different and I ended up winning the game thanks to my material advantage. However, did I not miss something in the position in the diagram?

If you'd like to see a preview of that game in a commented video, it's on my YouTube channel at this link. I also have a full version of this game and many other nice games in my new "Blitz Chess Fever" DVD, on sale on www.chessqueen.com.

Merci, Nigel
Did you know that when White plays 5.Nf3 in the French (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7) that indicates he is going to play against Black’s “hanging pawns” on e6 and d5? It is strategical knowledge of this kind that Nigel Davies presents on his new DVD on the French Defence.

NEU: Valeri Lilov: The Sicilian Kan Variation

San Diego Student Spotlight: Daniel Sun

Student Spotlight: Daniel Sun
Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 12:05 a.m.

Daniel Sun, 9, bested his opponent last month in the San Diego Winter Scholastic Chess Championship at the San Diego Chess Club in Balboa Park. Daniel lost one game.

“I was beat by one of my best friends, so I’m sort of still recovering from that, but otherwise, I won every other game,” he said. “I also beat the? person who got first place last tournament, when I got second, so I’m happy about that.”

Daniel is in the fourth grade at Dingeman Elementary School in Scripps Ranch. His father taught him to play chess when Daniel was in kindergarten. He later joined the San Diego Chess Club so he could improve. He plays a few times each week and recently started watching a DVD of multiple world champion chess player Susan Polgar.

“I learned a lot, like what to do in a position. If there’s a certain position, I can think about whatever I want to do.”

Daniel said he likes playing because he believes the game improves his skills in planning and thinking. He said his dad thinks chess will help him in school and possibly help him earn a scholarship.

How would he rate his dad as a chess player?

“He’s not really good. I can beat him,” Daniel said.

When he isn’t mastering strategies on the chess board, Daniel likes P.E., math and art — in that order.

He likes math because he finds it interesting, especially when his teacher brings in brownies to explain fractions or the number of chocolate chips in each cookie to illustrate multiplication.

He’s not sure what he wants to be when he grows up — maybe a professional basketball player who plays chess for fun.

— Lisa Deaderick

Hier lauern Tricks!

NEU: Nigel Davies: French Defence Strategy
Videotrainingskurs in englischer Sprache. Gesamtspielzeit : 4 Stunden.

Opening surveys in CBM 134
The Albin Countergambit does not have a particularly good reputation, but since it is not an opening you have to face very often as White, a lot of players do not know how to achieve a safe advantage against it. This is above all the case after the main move 5.g3 when the switch to 5...Nge7 (from the previoulsy more usual 5...Bg4) means that it is no longer so clear how White can point to any opening advantage. Simple solutions are wanted and they are provided by GM Dorian Rogozenco with his repertoire for White based on the move 5.Nbd2. Here is the complete article, one of 12 CBM 134 DVDs. Rogozenco: Albin with 5.Nbd2

Below you will find this game with the comments by Beata, as well as the pgn a little below that. You can find the full comments in the 91st chess informator.

Eröffnungsübersichten in CBM 134

NEU: Lawrence Trent: Two Knight‘s Defence

Chess in cinema – the ultimate collection

Chess in filmsChess is often represented in films. Sometimes merely as decoration, often with a deeper, symbolic meaning. In Hollywood the connotation of chess seems to be that of the lonely, disturbed man, seeking pastime and consolation in the royal game. U.S. Chess: Changing of the Guard

The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis has released a DVD that choronicles the 2009 U.S. Chess Championship. The video features video footage from the top players in the U.S. and their expressions on a variety of topics. The preview appears to capture the intensity of the event as well as the beauty of the venue. Rex and Jeanne Sinquefield have been the hosts of the championship since the USCF parted ways with the previous sponsor. This production appears to share a glimpse of the important role the Sinquefields are playing in what appeared to be a dying chess scene.

The Scotch, part 5: a dynamic endgame opportunity

How does White do something with this passive position?

Howell-Werle, London 2009. White to play.

Concluding our brief survey of the Scotch (1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 exd4 4 Nxd4), we look at the kind of dynamic endgame struggle that can arise from this old but still important opening.

RB White's position after 1 exf5 Nxf5 2 Re1 (or 2 e4, or 2 Kd2) is so passive – and the e-pawn likely to be a long-term weakness – that White's best chance is to push with 1 e5. Assuming Black takes (1...d5 2 Na4 followed by Nc5 would give the white knight a great post ) with 1...dxe5, White has 2 Bc4, developing his bishop to another great square. If 2...exf4 3 exf4, OK White is a pawn down, but it hardly matters. With the white pieces all ready for action and Black's queenside pawns in a dreadful state, this has to be the best move.

DK 1 e5, as Howell played, is an excellent pawn sacrifice. To find it one needs to appreciate that the alternative, 1 exf5, leaves Black comfortably placed. Here's a typical scenario: 1...Nxf5 2 e4 Nh4. The f-pawn must advance to save itself, and then the knight hops via f3 into e5. Compare this knight with White's, unable to move to its outpost on d5. With the pawns blockaded, Black has stabilised the position and can begin to take control.

After 1 e5 dxe5, it would be wrong to recapture with 2 fxe5 as 2... Ng6 followed by Nxe5 gives Black more freedom than in the game. 2 Bc4 is correct, preventing Black's bishop from emerging on e6, and now 2...exf4 3 exf4 Ng6? would be met by 4 Rxg6! hxg6 5 Rd3, and there is no defence to the checkmate on h3.

If you'd like to investigate the Scotch, then Starting Out: The Scotch Game by John Emms (Everyman Chess, £13.99) will provide you with the basics, while The Scotch Game for White by Vladimir Barsky (Chess Stars, £17.99) – just published – will provide more up-to-date theory. If you prefer to study with a DVD, I recommend the The Scotch Game by Nigel Davies (ChessBase, €26.99).

Brett in Flammen

Prinzen in Berlin

Kosteniuk beats Vishy Anand Chess Video

Hello everyone!

I am finishing my new DVD "Chess Blitz Fever", and have prepared another YouTube video for you all, with my win against overall World Chess Champion Vishy Anand.

In how many other sports can you see the women's world champion beat the overall (men's) world champion? Isn't that cool? In fact it's one of the main reasons why I think chess is the coolest of games: with hard work and lots of passion for chess you can beat anybody!

And for me, this win against the overall World Chess Champion, while only a blitz game, nevertheless is the realization of my dream, and gives me strength and desire to keep working to continue to get better at chess.

And to all girls and ladies out there, and to Moms who don't know if it's a good idea to play chess and to teach their daughters to play chess, I can say for sure that it is good for girls to play chess! Chess teaches strong work ethics, helps to concentrate, teaches decision making, trains memory, and is a good way to practice being competitive at a young age, since later in business and in life those competitive skills will surely turn out to be quite useful.

My recent YouTube video of my win against Magnus Carlsen got 28,000+ views in just 4 days, and over 200 comments.

I appreciate all your 5-star reviews and comments to my videos.

My DVD "Chess Blitz Fever" contains in the first part lots of tips on how to play better blitz chess and in the second part full commented videos of my wins (full games analyzed) against super-Grandmasters Vishy Anand, Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian, Vugar Gashimov, Gashimov, Alexander Morozevich, Alexander Grischuk, Judith Polgar, and Arkady Naiditsch. It will come out at the end of February and any DVD order placed before then qualifies for free shipping.

Magnus Carlsen and the Touch-Move Rule

Hello everybody!

I am finishing my new DVD project "
CHESS BLITZ FEVER", which is in part a video course with advice on how to play better blitz and partly a collection of some of my best wins from the 2009 World Blitz Championship, including wins against World Champion Vishy Anand, World #1 rated Magnus Carlsen, and Super-GM's Levon Aronian, Alexander Morozevich, Vugar Gashimov, Alexander Grischuk, Judith Polgar, and Arkady Naiditsch. I posted some of them on TubeChess but without comments, and the DVD versions are professionally produced with proper video intros and full commented games with both 2D boards and live blitz in parallel.

The YouTube video above is a sample of this DVD. This game Carlsen - Kosteniuk is a memorable game for me since I was able to beat the World #1 rated player Magnus Carlsen, 2801 ELO at the time, while I only had 2517 ELO.

It also illustrates the
Touch-Move rule in chess at its best. There is a lively discussion in the YouTube comments to my video, so feel free to join in if you have a YouTube nickname. If not, you can comment on this blog and also on my Facebook Fan page.

I will be posting some more samples on my
YouTube channel in the days ahead, but hope that you will support me by buying my DVD (preorders taken right now), that helps me produce more free videos for you to enjoy.

FantaCorus 2010!

Certo che no!

REGOLAMENTO

Review of Zuke 'Em, Expanded Edition

I have been reading the new "expanded" edition of Zuke 'Em, The Colle-Zukertort Revolutionized by David Rudel, whose work has interested me since I first heard about it over a year ago. As a practitioner and fan of amateur chess analysis, I recognized in Rudel a kindred spirit and admired (in the materials I saw on the web) the evident work he put into helping amateurs to understand the positional themes and patterns of this under-appreciated opening. I was also impressed by the amount of work that he had put into making his books and promoting them, with excellent websites (at zukertort.com, colle-system.com, and zuke-dukes.com -- the latter with a forum where players can share information, games, and ideas) and lots of online materials and videos (see the webliography at the end of this article for details). Now, finally reading his book, I am even more impressed by the quality of the work. His engaging "conversational" writing style, his focus on explaining themes and patterns rather than dumping a bunch of analysis on the page, and his excellent sense of design and presentation have been widely praised. But what impresses me most about Rudel's work is his desire to seek the best approach to playing the Colle-Zukertort and the way he uses the book format to teach it to others.

Rudel's quest for the "truth" about the Colle-Zukertort continues in the present edition, which breaks new ground for those who would understand the best way to play the opening. If you compare Rudel's repertoire to those of several other Colle-Zukertort books, you see right away that he has a lot of new ideas, many of the "why didn't anybody notice that before?" variety. His more interesting breakthroughs often involve adapting ideas from openings that reach similar positions to the Colle-Zukertort but with colors reversed. For example:
The book is both well-researched and full of innovative ideas. Rudel has done his homework, and the book offers a thorough bibliography of sources, suggesting that he left no stone unturned in seeking ideas. With so many books by professional players lacking any citation apparatus, it is nice to see a so-called "amateur" analyst being so careful. But while he has done good research, Rudel is not a follower of theory. In fact, he turns up so many interesting innovations because he actively searches for ideas to get White an edge instead of accepting "theory's verdict" of equality. After all, he plays the opening himself and he wants to anticipate problems before his opponents spring them on him. I was similarly driven in my analysis of the Urusov Gambit System, where I found published material blithely repeating the mistakes of previous writers or failing to pay attention to important problems in the opening. Doing that analysis made me recognize just how untrustworthy even the best players and analysts can occasionally be and how all players have to find their own path through theory, making their own decisions at each turn and trusting in themselves.

Rudel has not only done some innovative analysis, he has given a lot of thought to helping others understand what he has found. I am very impressed by his carefully structured presentation, which creates an excellent scaffolding for even developing players to master the ideas behind his system. Each chapter begins by setting forth the chief problem that White needs to solve in the line under discussion and the analysis and illustrative game that follow form a coherent piece with the idea of that chapter. Where specific lines call for deeper analysis, he has generally segregated that to the "Extra Analysis" chapter to keep from disrupting the flow of the presentation by focusing too much on specific details. And he concludes the book with a number of "Training" exercises keyed to each section and a set of diagrams to remind readers of the "New Ideas" that he has set forth in his book (especially useful for players who have studied and played the more traditional approaches).

Rudel's desire to teach his repertoire to others has led him to write two additional books of training materials that emerged from the original analysis he was doing on the Colle system. The Moment of Zuke: Critical Positions and Pivotal Decisions for Colle System Players focuses on the Colle more broadly and considers critical tactics and positional themes. Its seven modules (each consisting of "Lesson," "Exercises" and "Solutions" with explanations) are typical of his very orderly presentation and cover such critical Colle topics as how to deal with a Black Ne4, when it's safe to attack with g4, and when you can play the classic Bxh7 sacrifice -- or the double Bishop sacrifice. That last theme returns to make up a whole book in Bxh7: Master both sides of chess' most useful piece sacrifice in 5 easy lessons and 116 exercises which focuses exclusively on "The Greek Gift" (not only out of the Colle or Colle-Zukertort but a number of similar structures, including the French and other Queen Pawn openings). You can review some exercises from the book at his latest website, bishop-sacrifice.com. One of my favorite such sacs is Marshall - Stodie, Atlantic City 1920, but I could not find it in the book (an index of games and players would be a helpful addition to future editions.)

There are actually not that many books where you will find tactical and strategic patterns of a specific opening laid out so thoroughly. The only comparable examples that spring to mind are the recent Seven Ways to Smash the Sicilian (which covers seven different sacrificial themes, like its predecessor Sacrifices in the Sicilian) and New in Chess's "Tactics in the ..." series. With the power of ChessBase "position search," it is actually easier than ever to compile example games to illustrate various themes (as I found in writing Mating Patterns: Bishop and Rook and More Bishop and Rook Mates), so you would think there would be more such books.

Returning to the new edition of Zuke 'Em, I think Rudel has made significant improvements upon earlier editions (one of which I actually found at my library for comparison). He has added some sample games with significant annotations and offered some alternative lines to match player styles. But the most salient and important improvement, as he acknowledges, is at the level of proofreading, and he has done an excellent job eliminating errors in grammar, chess moves, and diagrams. I found only one bad diagram (with a Bishop accidentally substituted for a pawn on page 291) and only one error in grammar ("With this in mind, I propose a line inviting Black to take a free move he wish [sic] he did not have" [203]). And I was looking for error. [Rudel credits proofreaders Graham Stevens and John Wright for the improvements.]

The Colle-Zukertort is not in itself a complete repertoire, and Rudel recommends that readers fill out the rest by following Aaron Summerscale's cult classic A Killer Chess Opening Repertoire, which is due to be re-released in "a new enlarged edition" updated by Sverre Johnsen some time in early Spring 2010. In the meantime, Richard Palliser's Starting Out: d-Pawn Attacks is not a bad substitute, covering part of Summerscale's repertoire in the Barry Attack, the 150 Attack, and the Colle-Zukertort, and only skipping coverage of the Benoni and the Dutch (which you can find material on elsewhere). And there are other 1.d4 Repertoire Books out there to tide you over until the "return of the king" (Summerscale) -- though you might look for Summerscale's video series produced by Foxy Videos and now available from various sources. For those looking for a parallel repertoire as Black, I'd recommend the Nimzo- and Queen's-Indian complex and the French Defense, in which case you might add Play the Nimzo-Indian, Play the Queen's Indian, and How to Play against 1.e4 (on the French) to fill up your chess opening bookshelf.

A good place to start if you are considering giving the Colle-Zukertort a "test drive" is this article by Rudel, which begins with a bit of a sales pitch and then offers four ideas in the opening, including the difficulty Black has developing his queenside, White's extra kingside space, the crucial squares for various pieces, and the possibility of exchanging pawns in the center by dxc5 to unleash the dark square Bishop.

_______. Reviving the Colle-Zukertort Main Line at Chessville
Discusses how the idea of exchanging in the center and playing a6 in the Tartakower can be adapted for use in the Colle-Zukertort to revive the main line where White is often annoyed by Nb4 attacking the Bishop at d3. Offers quite a bit of useful analysis.

Winners of 2009 Kosteniuk Grand-Prix Puzzle Contest

Hello everyone!

2009 is over and so is my 2009 Alexandra Kosteniuk Grand-Prix Puzzle Contest. It's time to announce the winners of the December Alexandra Kosteniuk Grand-Prix Puzzle Contest as well as the overall winner of 2009.

Surprisingly, out of all the solutions received only 2 solutions were totally correct.

Here are the full answers to the puzzles:

Hoffman - Petrov, 1844. Black to move.

Puzzle 1. Black plays and wins

12. … O-O !! Nice queen sacrifice 13.
Nxd8

[13. Rf1 Rxf7 14. Rxf7 Qg5+ 15. Qg4 Qxg4 15. Kxg4 Kxf7 -+ ]

13. ... Bf2+ 14. Kh3

[14. Kg4 Rf4+ 15. Kg5 (15. Kh5 Rh4+ 16.Kg5 h6+ 17.Kf5 Ne7#) 15. ... h6+ 16. Kh5 Rh4+ 17. Kg6 Ne7#]

14. ... d6+ 15. e6

[15.g4 Nf4#]

15. ... Nf4+ 16. Kg4 Nxe6 17.g3 Nd4

[ 17. ... Nd8+ leads to checkmate even faster 18. Kh5 (18. Kg5 Rf5+ 19. Kg4 Rf6+ 20. Kg5 Be3+ 21. Kh4 Rh6+ 22. Qh5 g5#; 18. Kh4 Rf4+ 19. Kg5 Ne6+ 20. Kh5 g6+ 21. Kh6 Rh4+ 22. gxh4 Be3#) 18...Rf5+ 19.Kg4 Rf6+ 20.Kh4 Rh6+ 21.Kg5 Be3#]

18. Nxe6 Bxe6+ 19. Kh4

[19. Kg5 Rf5+ 20. Kg4 h5+ 21. Kh3 Rf3#]

19. ... Nf5

[19. ... Rf4 was also checkmating]

20. Kh3 Ne3+ 21. Kh4 Ng2+ 22. Kh5 g6+ 23. Kg5 Be3#

Healey, 1861, White plays and checkmates in 3 moves.

A very nice and difficult checkmate in 3 problem, here's what Fernando Rosetti writes about it:

"The knight protects a mate square (d6) while the bishop guards the c7 and d7 mate squares. Therefore, black has only two playable moves: Bd7 or Be8. How to find the key move?Theoretically, in a composition, each “extra piece” plays an important role. Not different here. The pawn on g2 avoids mate in one (Qg1), Rf3 stops the pawn advance f3-f2, and therefore g1 is an important square. The bishop on a1 seems useless but sharp-eyed solvers can understand him like a “correction” in order to avoid the dual. So, the key is the only square that does not block up the queen’s incursion to g1 via b1.

1. Rh1!! Be8/Bd7
2. Qb1 Bb5
3. Qg1#

If black plays other than 2. ... Bb5, white checkmates with 3. Qb4."

Pillsbury – Em. Lasker
St. Petersburg (1895-96)

17. … Rxc3 18. fxe6

[ In case of 18. bxc3 Black can get a better endgame by playing Qxc3 19. Qf3! (19.fxe6? Qb4+ 4.Ka1 Rc8 5.exf7+ Kf8) 19. ... Qxf3! 20. gf Bxf5+ 21. Bd3 Bh3 or he can play for an attack with 18. ... Bd7!? since after 19. Qf3 Rc8 Black's attack is unstoppable]

Ra3!! The key of the combination.

19. exf7+?

[ With the strongest 19. ba! White would have still been able to save the game but for that he would need to do many more excellent defensive moves.]

Rxf7 20. bxa3 Qb6+ 21. Bb5 Qxb5 22. Ka1 Rc7?

[The easiest way to win here is to play 22. ... Qc4! 23. Qg4 Re7! (with the idea Re4 or Re2) 24. Rhe1 Bxd4+ 25. Qxd4 Rxe1 winning]

23. Rd2 Rc4 24. Rhd1?

[White could have make a draw after 24. Re1!]

24. ... Rc3?

[24. ... Qc6 was winning]

25. Qf5 Qc4 26.Kb2?

[26. Kb1 could have helped White to stop Blaxk's attack and gain the initiative]

26. ... Rxa3 !! 27. Qe6+ Kh7?

[ Black was winning after 27. ... Kh8]

28. Kxa3??

[ After 28. Qf5+ Kh8 29. Kb1 White could saved the game]

Qc3+ 29. Ka4 b5+! 30. Kxb5 Qc4+ 31. Ka5 Bd8+ 32. Qb6 Bxb6#

You can find more comments about this game in the excellent work by Garry Kasparov "My Great Predecessors", volume 1.

So...

The Grand-winner of the Grand-Prix is Fernando Rossetti from Brazil, he gets my new autographed book "Diary of a Chess Queen", congratulations!

Renato Oliviera and Francisco Valiente were just a few points behind the winner and get my "Best Games DVD" as a prize.

Thanks to everybody for participating!

Invitation to Miami Diary of a Chess Queen Book Signings

Dear friends of chess,

It is my pleasure to invite you to either or both of my Miami book signings, that will take place on January 7 at 7 PM at the Aventura Barnes & Noble, and on January 11 at 8 PM at the Coral Gables Books & Books.

My book "Diary of a Chess Queen" will be presented to Miami on those occasions, and I will gladly sign autographs for you and for your loved ones.

I will talk about my book, and will take any questions about my career or my games. I will take a chess board with me and if you have some question, you can feel free to ask it then directly to me.

The book contains 64 of my best chess games, commented, but also at least 1/3 of text, which conveys my life story, from being a little 5-year old girl who just learned to play chess, up to my winning the women's world chess championship last year. There are more than 100 photos in the book, and lots of diagrams, that make following the games very easy.

You can read some Amazon reviews about my book.

I hope to see you there, and send you my very best wishes for the New Year!

May Love, Happiness and Chess be with you all along 2010!

Neu: Adrian Mikhalchishin: Winning Structures
So erfand z.B. Fritztrainer-DVD in englischer Sprache. RETROSPECTIVE 2009

Opening surveys in CBM 133
When Magnus Carlsen convincingly outplayed that well known openings connoisseur Peter Leko in the very first round of the tournament in Nanjing, the world of chess pricked up its ears, because the Norwegian had done so with a Scotch, an opening which in modern times has been associated above all with the name of Garry Kasparov, who is now known to be Carlsen's trainer. This game spurred Igor Stohl on to take an extremely close look at the variation employed. Here is the complete article, one of a total of 12 on the DVD of CBM 133.

Re: Cohabitation Fritz 12 et Fritz 9
Salut,

Eröffnungsübersichten in CBM 133

Christmas Chess Goodwill in Tucson

Dear Chess Friends,

After my recent blog offer for a free Chess Goodwill trip to any place in the USA to promote chess with kids during the Christmas period, the requests started flowing in, and so now after looking at all the applications, I am happy to announce the winner: the non-profit organization 9 QUEENS in Tucson, Arizona!

I will be flying to Tucson, Arizona, on December 20, and will star at several events, including an up to 50-board simul, a meeting at the 9 Queens Academy, and a reception. I am excited at the possibility to promote chess in Tucson and to recognize 9 Queens, which does so much for women's chess. A big thanks to 9 Queens and specially to Jean Hoffman who was able to organize everything at such an incredibly short notice!

I support 9 Queens strongly, so if you also find their work worthwhile, I urge you to go their site and make a donation of any amount. And if you approve of my going there to promote chess to kids at no cost, I would be grateful to you if you bought something from my web shop, for example my totally new book "Diary of a Chess Queen", or my new DVD "My Best Games". Free autograph with each purchase.

Here is the Official Press Release of the event:

CURRENT WOMEN’S WORLD CHESS CHAMPION COMES TO TUCSON?

Tucson nonprofit selected as one of the few chess programs in the nation honored by Grandmaster Alexandra Kosteniuk

?(TUCSON, AZ ) Current Women's World Chess Champion and Grandmaster Alexandra Kosteniuk has selected the Tucson nonprofit organization 9 Queens as one of the few chess programs in the country to honor with her Christmas Goodwill Offer. On December 20, 2009, as part of her national goodwill tour to promote the benefits of chess, Ms. Kosteniuk will fly to Tucson, Arizona to participate in a range of free educational activities hosted by 9 Queens. From 2-4 pm at the Parasol Project Arts Space (299 S Park Avenue), Ms. Kosteniuk will answer questions from participants in the 9 Queens Academy and read from her new book "Diary of a Chess Queen." Immediately following the Queens Academy, 9 Queens will host a reception and simultaneous chess exhibit at MAST a new boutique located next door to Parasol Project. During the simultaneous chess exhibit, Ms. Kosteniuk will play up to 50 chess players at the same time.??

In addition to serving as the current Women's World Chess Champion, Ms. Kosteniuk, also serves as the co-chair for the World Chess Federation's Commission for Women’s Chess. Ms Kosteniuk, a notable chess celebrity, is widely regarded as the most popular chess player in the world. Known for the mantra "Chess is Cool," Kosteniuk was recently voted the most influential chess player on Twitter.

??"Alexandra has done so much to promote not only women's chess but chess in general," says 9 Queens executive director Jean Hoffman, "It is a huge honor to have her come to Tucson and recognize our growing chess community.

"??Over the past two years, 9 Queens has created a range of programs designed in empower under-served and under-represented populations through chess. In August 2008, 9 Queens created the Tucson Queens Initiative--a multi-year campaign designed not only to increase the percentage of female chess players, but also to empower girls to achieve academic, personal and professional success. Since then the percentage of women participating in 9 Queens beginner chess tournaments as skyrocketed from less than ten percent to almost fifty percent. The high percentage of female chess players in Tucson stands in stark contrast to national trends where women make up around eight percent of the chess community.

???"I could not think of a better organization to do this goodwill event with since I support 9 Queens strongly,” explained Kosteniuk regarding her decision to partner with 9 Queens.

Hurry up
If you want to improve your understanding of a complex opening with a huge history the best that can happen is to have a really strong player with many years of experience teach it to you. That's exactly what GM Lubomir Ftacnik offers you on his Sicilian Scheveningen and Gruenfeld DVDs. Carsten Hansen from chesscafe.com tested the former thoroughly. Read his review with sampler.
