Controversy

We received the following open letter from Aviv Bushinsky, Chairman of the Israeli Chess Federation.

This letter was yesterday sent to FIDE, FIDE President Mr. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and Honorary FIDE Vice President Mr. Israel Gelfer.

Dear Mr. President,

I write to you with great concern following what seems as a serious incident that occurred today during the closing ceremony of the world junior championships held in Turkey. Happily our girl junior player, Marcel Efroymsky, has won the world title and the gold medal. As costumed in such events, the delegations prepared to stand and salute the national anthem of the winner’s country. Astonishingly and without any warning, the organizers decided to cancel the playing of the winners anthem. The Turkish organization has offered a ridiculous explanation that they do not have the time to spend on such event.

This excuse is absurd in light of the same venue hosting this event two years ago where all winner anthems were played! In there actions, the organizers demonstrated disrespect to the junior winners, their federation and their countries. As chairman of the Israeli chess federation, I herby urge you to investigate this incident. I must say that this kind of boycott (if such occurred) strikes as a another example of how politics interferes with chess. I call you as president of the FIDE, for which the tournament carried your flag, to investigate this issue and if the information appeared to be accurate, then to denounce this disrespectful conduct if the information.

My feeling is, that such events hurt chess in general and send the wrong message the children who dream to become chess champions taking pride in representing their countries.

Yours truly,

Aviv Bushinsky
Chairman of the Israeli Chess Federation

According to GM Boris Alterman, board member of the Israeli Chess Federation, the absence of anthems is likely to be related to the fact that an Israeli player won, in view of the present delicate political problems among the two countries. He wrote to us: “Two years ago at the same venue (WYCC 2007) all winners’ anthems were played during the closing ceremony. This year only the Russian anthem was played during the closing ceremony as the most successful delegation (according medals) in the WYCC. What reason had been cancelled the anthems issue of the all winners this year, if not a political one? It seems as Israeli anthem is not acceptable these days in Turkey.”

According to co-editor Yochanan Afek the situation has already led to a big response in the Israeli press, which suddenly puts chess in the spotlights, but as so often, not for the best reasons…

Ex-Kiwi Bobby Cheng has just become a world champ. Cheng, who now plays under the Aussie flag, scored 9 points and topped outright the field of 142 players in the U12 section of the World Youth Chess Championships. Among his wins were these two nice ones.

WYCC 2009
The 2009 World Youth Chess Championship is at his halfway point and Australia has 2 players leading their respective events. In the Under 8 Championship Anton Smirnov is tied for first with 5.5/6. In the Under 14 Championship Yi Yuan also has the same score and is sharing first place with IM Core Jorge.
Yi is one of Canberra's strongest juniors, and while Anton isn't a Canberra boy these days, he was born in the nations capital. Some other Canberra players taking part are Emma Guo in the Under 14 Girls (3.5/6) and Alana Chibnall and Tamzin Oliver, both in the Under 18 Girls, and both on 1.5/6

Campeonatos Mundiales Sub8 a Sub18 2009

Startprobleme in Kemer

Campionati del mondo Under 8 ? 18

Spedizione azzurra abbastanza nutrita, come è ormai tradizione. I nostri ragazzi attraverso i risultati del primo turno:

Simone De Filomeno

Under 18

Simone De Filomeno 2234 – Tamir Nabaty 2508 0 – 1

Under 18 F

Tamzin Oliver 1777 – Marina Brunello 2158 0 – 1

Under 16

Adriano Testa 2175 – Andrew Newton 1 – 0

Under 16 F

Hakimifard Ghazal 2124 – Rosa Maria Casolino 1761 1 – 0

Under 14

Saraçý Nderim – Federico Boscolo 1990 0 – 1

Konstantin Nikologorskiy 2164 – Samuele Bisi 1774 1 – 0

Under 14 F

Filli Balzano 1688 – Maha Eid 1993 1 / 2

Daniela Movileanu 1825 – Damla Temimhan 1 – 0

Under 12

Marco Codenotti 2119 – Aleksandar Markovic 1750 1 / 2

Spyridon Naoum 1885 – Emanuele Vesce 1 – 0

Under 12 F

Laura Gueci - Aytan Arzuman Qizi Amrayeva 1792 1 / 2

Under 10

Francesco Rambaldi (FRA) - Zoltan Molnar Saska 1694 1 – 0

Aryan Tari 1932 – Diego Forno 1 – 0

Igor Kudelya 1995 – Riccardo Bisi 1 – 0

Under 10 F

Veronika Zhiljaeva – Tea Gueci 1 / 2

Under 8

Anton Sidorov – Tommaso Di Nezio 1 – 0

Under 8 F

Zsófia Molnar-Saska – Anastasia Buffa 1 – 0

Marina Brunello

Smerdon To Face Super GM
As I mentioned last week, there is a large group of young Aussies headed for Turkey to participate in the World Youth Chess Championships. Canberra's Alana Chibnall has posted some photos on Facebook of a few Aussie team members, while ChessDom has an album with just a handful of images so far. Let's hope that they'll keep adding a few more from here on end.

Also en route to OTB action in the upcoming World Cup, in far away Khanty-Mansiysk, is GM David Smerdon. For such a terribly long trip I hope he'll manage to survive his first round opponent who is none other than Cuban numero uno, super GM Leinier Dominguez.

Someone with probably slightly better chances to move beyond the first round is Pinoy GM Wesley So. He has the advantageous white bits against GM Gadir Guseinov. But fellow Pinoy grandmasters Laylo and Antonio will hold the black pieces against no less than Navara and Kamsky, respectively.

Aussies in 2009 World Youths

While the Aussie contingent in the currently ongoing World Juniors in Argentina is somewhat anaemic, the group headed for the upcoming World Youths in Turkey will be a far bigger one. No less than 28 people - that includes parents, players and coaches - will turn up under the Australian flag. Lucky for the Aussie boys and girls is that they'll enjoy the services of 2 grandmasters as well as IM Lane and FM Smirnov, so we can expect a good showing particularlly from the likes of Bobby Cheng and Yi Yuan.

The even will run from 11 November until 23 November. Chessdom has a preview (and I thank the guys for bringing this to my attention).

FIDE Trainers' Commission 3rd Tele-Meeting (06.06.2009) Minutes & Decisions
fide_logo_150

1. Rogaska Slatina Meeting: The Chairman informed on his meeting at the city of Rogaska Slatina, in May 2009 (see Downloads TRG Rogaska Slatina 2009-Minutes) and on the TRG's announcement made in various Web Sites (see Downloads TRG Info Commercial). The Council approved the contents.

2. Obituaries: Unfortunately two respected trainers passed away recently, Mikhail Podgaets and Alexander Panchenko. The Council approved the obituaries, which were uploaded on TRG's website (see Downloads TRG Obituaries).

3. FIDE Trainers Awards - Update: Council's proposal for the panel of FIDE Trainers Awards is:

PROPOSED PANEL OF FIDE TRAINERS AWARDS

1. Ignatius Leong (Singapore) – FIDE General Secretary
2. Zurab Azmaiparashvili (Georgia) – FIDE Vice-President
3. Ali Nihat Yazici (Turkey) – FIDE Vice-President
4. Susan Polgar (USA) – FIDE Co-Chairman Women Commission
5. Uwe Boensch (Germany) – GM/FST

6. Miguel Illescas (Spain) – GM/FST
7. Smbat Lputian (Armenia) – GM/FST

SUBSTITUTES

1. Florencio Campomanes (Philippines) – FIDE Honorary President

2. Aleksandr Beliavsky (Slovenia) – GM/FST

3. Silvino Garcia (Cuba) – GM/FST

4. Trainers Titles – Direct Approval Re-opening: We received an application form the Bolivian Chess Federation, concerning a potentional trainer title for Mr. Feruffino (Bolivia). Unfortunately we cannot accept it, but we have to think seriously to re-open a short period of direct approval titles for a limited number of trainers (see Downloads TRG Bolivia-Feruffino 1 & 2 & 3).

5. FIDE Trainers' Seminars 2009: The Council was informed about the following Seminars. Directors of Academies/Seminars must fill up the draft forms (applications) and send them to TRG for final approval:

N Town Country Dates Lecturers
1 Sulaimaniyah Iraq 27.05-01.06.2009 Long Peter (MAS)

Hassan Khaled (EGY)

2 Berlin Germany 25.06-30.06.2009 Boensch Uwe (GER)
3 Indianapolis USA 05.08-07.08.2009 Khodarkovsky Michael (USA)
4 Switzerland 07.08-12.08.2009 Mikhalchishin Adrian (SLO)

Boensch Uwe (GER)

5 Porto San Giorgio Italy 01.09-08.09.2009 Mikhalchishin Adrian (SLO)

Grivas Efstratios (GRE)

6 Antalya Turkey 13.11-20.11.2009 Mikhalchishin Adrian (SLO)

Grivas Efstratios (GRE)

It must be noted that the Iraq Seminar which was excellently handled by Mr. Peter Long and Mr. Hassan Khaled, was a great success for the TRG, as no less than 47 participants attended it (see previous post and Downloads TRG Iraq Seminar 2009 Report). It may be of interest that the seminar was the first international sports event held in Iraq for six years! Another first for chess!

The Council will inform FIDE on the payments (see Downloads TRG Iraq Seminar 2009 Payments). Also, the Trainers Archives were updated (See Downloads TRG Title Holders).

We also got some valuable info on Libya's FIDE Academy through FIDE General Secretary Mr. Igantius Leong: City: Tripoli, Director: Mrs. Khadija Zohdi, Contact: Lopeenus@yahoo.com, Title: Hay Alzohour.

On Porto San Giorgio Seminar the program and other details were prepared (See Downloads TRG Porto San Giorgio 2009 President 1 & 2 and TRG Porto San Giorgio 2009 Program).

Finally, the Antalya's Seminar will be the first one of a common cooperation between the TRG, the CACDEC and the ARIF/IOC. For the next four years (2009-2010-2011-2012) in every WYCC, a TRG Seminar will be held. The total fund for each seminar will be 7.000 Euros (see previous minutes and Downloads TRG Budget 2009) and it will be sponsored by ARISF (Association of Recognised International Sports Federations), which cooperates with IOC and CACDEC, on equal parts (50%). The program is already prepared (see Downloads TRG Antalya 2009 Program).

6. Evaluation of Educational Computer Programmes: The Committee (see previous minutes) work on this subject under the chairman Mr. Uwe Boensch.

Mr. Peter Long is kindly assisting and informed the Council that Mr. Mohr has asked him to look at the Slovenian online teaching program for schools but it is not a ready product - in sample mode - apparently also being discussed with Global Chess/FIDE and with the Chairman as a consultant.

Convekta (ChessOK) has also proposed that we look at a number of their products and he will begin doing this shortly (see Download TRG Convekta).

None of the other members of the committee has been in contact and it is sad so many other prominent products from DGT, ChessBase, Alburt, Polgar, etc. have not been submitted for our consideration.

7. Slovakia Academy: We received from the Slovakian Chess Federation a letter for support and cooperation on a potentional FIDE Academy. We passed the info to the FIDE Secretary and we will keep an eye on the subject (see Downloads TRG Slovakia 1 & 2).

8. FIDE Executive Board: The 80th Annual Congress will be held in the period from October 11th to 19th in Kallithea, Halkidiki, Greece at the G-Hotels Complex. The original intention to hold the Congress in Singapore was not possible when the F1 Grand Prix in Singapore was announced for the same dates, making it impossible to obtain reasonable hotel rates for attendees.

All the Council's decisions/proposals will come in force after the next Presidential Board's approval.

Interview with GM Norm holder IM S P Sethuraman
I first saw this shy but confident looking lad at Sangli, in a very small tournament. International Master Sethuraman was attending the tournament as a part of his family's journey to Shirdi, a favorite religious place for many. He was one of the two IMs participating at that tournament. Although he finished tied for the first position, it was obviously not his best performance, one reason being that he had played two consecutive tournaments before that tournament.

After a couple weeks of rest and preparation, he proceeded to play at Parsvnath and Gurgaon, two major tournaments held in India. The results were there for all to see and appreciate. Sethuraman managed to get his GM norm at Parsvnath and just missed another by half a point. In the bargain, he beat some very strong GMs like Gleizerov, Iuldachev, Safin and drew against Kuzubov, Ulibin, Kunte, Ismagambetov. The only blip being his loss against GM Das. What an amazing turnaround! Here was one of India's most promising prodigies playing like a seasoned professional even before he turned 16 (on Feb 25)

Sethuraman playing GM Ulibin

imchess.com: Hello! Congrats on your amazing performances in the last couple of months!
Sethuraman: Thanks.

imchess: Did you finish your exams?
Sethuraman: I finished my model exams and the final exams start on March 4th.

imchess: Oh! I'll try to wind this interview fast so that you can concentrate on your studies.
Sethuraman: No, its fine. It's good to have a break in between. I have finished most of the preparations. (Sethuraman is giving his 11th standard exams and is a good student having scored 83% marks in his 10th standard exams. His school Velammal boasts of other strong players such as Adhiban and Shyam Sundar. They encourage Chess a lot.)

imchess: How did you turnaround your form from normal to really outstanding in a matter of a couple of months? At Sangli, you just about performed at your expected rating and at Parsvnath and Gurgaon, you really played at GM levels.
Sethuraman: At Sangli I did not have enough rest before the event. I was playing 3 tournaments consecutively.

Sethuraman with Anand at the Delhi tournament, where Anand was making one of his first public appearances after his World Championship title win

Watch games where Sethuraman beat GMs

GM Safin vs IM Sethuraman 0-1

GM Iuldachev vs IM Sethuraman 0-1

imchess: Who is your coach?
Sethuraman: My father, Panaiappan (a National B player) taught me Chess at age 5 and has been my coach. I also had a 21 day coaching session with GM R B Ramesh. I was also trained by IM P Konguvel.

Sethuraman after coming back with a medal at the World Youth Chess Championships. GM R B Ramesh is sitting at the extreme right. Also in the center is elite GM K Sasikiran

imchess: How do you usually prepare for tournaments?
Sethuraman: I prepare using my laptop using Chess engines. I also prepare from relevant books.

imchess: Do you prepare with your Schoolmates like Adhiban? Many strong GMs play practice matches with strong players of their cities or countries. Even Anand worked with Sasikiran and Ganguly from India.
Sethuraman: I used to do that earlier and we even visited each other's homes to prepare but now it is difficult to find time.

imchess: How has this rating period been for you?
Sethuraman: This period has been good for me. I have gained points from the two major tournaments and also earned a GM norm. I missed another norm by just half a point. In addition to this, I finished 5th at Parsvnath in a strong field.

imchess: Did you have any specific strategies for these two tournaments? Any goals?
Sethuraman: I did not perform at my best at the last two tournaments before Parsvnath, so I was determined to correct that and also was aiming to gain ELO points and get the GM norm.

imchess: I noticed that you sometimes simplify to favorable endgames directly, for example against GM Safin. Is that deliberate or is it because the position demands that?
Sethuraman: With Black, I try to equalize and wait for the opponent to push hard and make an error. Against Safin, I had prepared the particular variation in detail and hence simplified to a favorable position. I am comfortable in all positions. For example, in the game against Gelizerov, I had a pleasant position right from the opening and he actually offered me a draw on move 13 but I refused since I had prepared upto move 16 for that particular game. I played on since I am comfortable in such positions and eventually won. It also happened to be my first breakthrough with the black pieces.

Sethuraman on his way to beating GM Gleizerov

imchess: What about the games with the strong GM Kuzubov and GM Iuldachev?
Sethuraman: I have played Kuzubov twice and drawn both games, which mostly turned to be major pieces endgames. Against Iuldachev, I played aggressively and beat him since I was very confident after earning my 10 game GM norm and also because I was more relaxed.

imchess: What about encounters with Indian GMs? You will probably start meeting them over the board more often now.
Sethuraman: I have played some strong Indian GMs like Ganguly, Kunte, Gopal and so on. My score was not favorable so far, but off late I have started played much better against them.

imchess: What about overseas exposure? Have you played good tournaments out of India?
Sethuraman: I have played the World Youth Championships, where I won medal. Under the Sai Scheme, I went to Spain, Biel (Switzerland), and France.

imchess: Do you have sponsors to travel and play?
Sethuraman: My father is scouting for sponsors so that I can play more regularly in important tournaments. He is a full time Chess coach.

imchess: What are your ambitions in Chess say 2-3 years from now and 10 years down the line?
Sethuraman: I first want to become a GM and then aim for a rating of 2600 over the next 2 years. In the longer term, I want to become an elite GM of say 2700 and above.

imchess: Who are your idols in Chess?
Sethuraman: Fischer and Kasparov inspire me. Among the current players, Anand and Topalov are my heroes. I like Fischer's playing style a lot.

imchess: Have you had a chance to meet your Idols? Any advice they gave you?
Sethuraman: Yes, I met Anand at his home and also after his Bonn win. He gave me advice for one of my tendencies to push too hard in clearly drawn positions and losing sometimes. He told me to assess the position objectively and compromise if it is a clear draw, especially with black pieces. For example, I lost many games that way in France 2005 at the World Youths.

imchess: Do you prepare with physical and mental training for your tournaments?
Sethuraman: Yes, I go for jogs and also do Yoga and Meditation.

imchess: What is your next tournament? Are you playing at the Mumbai Mayor's tournament?
Sethuraman: My next tournament is in Dubai after my exams. I will not be able to play at the Mumbai tournament since it clashes with Dubai.

imchess: Thank you for your time and good luck for your future! Prepare well for your exams.
Sethuraman: Thank you.

Chess Life Online Interview with IM Shankland
(This photo from the official World Youth website shows Sam playing in the final round. He is white against GM Quang Liem Le on the second board from the bottom.)

Check out this extensive interview that IM Sam Shankland gave to Chess Life Online. Most of the article concentrates on the World Youth Festival in Vietnam, where Sam tied for first U18 and thereby earned the bronze medal. While you are reading the story, make sure to answer the following six reading comprehension questions.
  1. How did a Frisbee change the course of Sam's life?
  2. What form of transportation do the Vietnamese use to get to the beach?
  3. Which variation of the Sicilian defense was Sam afraid of playing as black?
  4. Sam values the chess books by which author like gold?
  5. T or F: White wins by force in the Dragon by quickly pushing his g- and h-pawns.
  6. T or F: According to the article, some people say that Sam is now overrated.
Do you want to show Sam how much you admire him? Email me all six correct answers and I will publish your first name and last initial right here on the blog. Send the answers to michael AT fpawn DOT com by Friday evening, December 12.
All six answers correct
: Bob C, Colin M.

In addition, Sam annotated all eleven of his games from Vietnam, many in substantial detail. Responding to one interview question, he makes a point about the importance of annotating your games. If you too want to some day become a master or even an International Master, then print out the article and carefully play through these games.

WYCC in Vung Tau - Still A Happy Memory!
closing-with-flags
The World Youth Chess Championship 2008 has ended but the accolades still come pouring in! Many are in post cards and hand written thank you notes. The following is a sample e-mail to the Technical Director!

Dear Mr. Leong,

My daughter, Karsten McVay, and I recently returned from Vietnam where Karsten represented the U.S.A. in the Girls Under-16 division at the WYCC 2008.

Karsten and Ijust wanted to thank you for all the planning, hard work and time you and your staff put in to organize the World Youth Chess Championships. We wereSO impressed by how well-run the tournament was and by your country's wonderful hospitality which made us feel so welcome!!! Everyone from the hotel staff (we stayed at the DIC Star Hotel) to all the volunteers were so nice and willing to go "out on a limb" for us. Although this was my daughter's fourth WYCC tournament, this was the first time I had accompanied her while my husband stayed at home with our other two children. I described in detail to my husband thefantastic and extravagant welcome we got at the Opening Ceremony and so many other things that had been done to make our stay more enjoyable. My husband was very impressed and wished he could have been in Vietnam to witnessour wonderful experience first-hand. Karsten (and I) were very honored that she was able to represent the U.S. A. at the WYCC. You and your staff helped make our experience in Vietnam an experience we will never forget and one that we will cherish forever.

Thank you again for a job that was MORE than well done!!!

Best,

Kimberly Doo McVay and Karsten McVay

note

The following was also received by the Bulletin Editor and so posted on the tournament Blog www.2008wycc.blogspot.com.

From FT & IM Martica Fierro

Hey Peter !!

How are you? Hope very good, I tried to look for you the last day but i couldnt find you. I wanted to tell you the seminar was very good and useful. Also, tell me where to find your blog, i want to write that the organization was great and all the Italian team is really grateful for the organization and hospitality of the vietnamitan .

Thanks !!

Martica

From IM & Head of India Delegation Manual Aaron

Dear Peter,

By now you must be back in your country.

During the last few days at Vung Tau I was in a mad rush with my reports to my newspaper back in India taking priority and solving all kinds of problems of our players.

I hope you have the Vung Tau WYCC games in PGN. I would be grateful if you would send it to me by Email. I need them for our magazines.

We had many good experiences and a few bad at Vung Tau: I can only say one thing. The organisers tried to do their best and they succeeded 95%.

After the closing ceremony, the bronze winner of the U-16, Debashis Das, came to me and said that he had received only the wooden chess pieces as a gift and no chess board. He wanted me to get him the board! In that huge crowd and noise he wanted me to get him his chess board.

There were other confusions too!

With best wishes,

Manuel Aaron

World Youth Chess Championship 2008

Forza azzurrini !!

I nostri ragazzi:

Under 18: Alessandro Bonafede FM 2327

Under 18 F: Roberta Messina 1949

Under 16: Enrico Forato 2109

Under 16 F: Chiara Palmitessa 1772

Under 14: Nicholas Paltrinieri 1948 e Samuele Bisi (1626it)

Under 14 F: Eleonora Pes (1605it)

Under 12: Marco Codenotti 2050 e Riccardo Zito (1575it)

Under 12 F: Filli Balzano 1777

Under 10: Fulvio Zamengo (1650it)

Under 10 F: Alessia Santeramo (1545it)

Under 8: Riccardo Bisi (1473it) e Daniele Arbore (1398it)

Under 8 F: Shiri Binder (1515it)

Nell’under 14 la star è Dariusz Swiercz (2478), che all’europeo si è cimentato ottimamente nell’under 18.

Assenti tutti i principali protagonisti dell’europeo.

Under 8 femminile: indovinate?

WJCC, V turno: diretta Rombaldoni

GM Popov - Rombaldoni in diretta

Rombaldoni perde

inizio ore 14 In Italia
