I grandi assenti

1. Russia (RUS 2500)

1 GM Kosteniuk Alexandra 2516
2 IM Kosintseva Tatiana 2536
3 IM Kosintseva Nadezhda 2493
4 IM Romanko Marina 2453
5 WFM Gunina Valentina 2437

Alexandra Kostenjuk

2. Georgia (GEO 2474)

1 GM Dzagnidze Nana 2535
2 IM Javakhishvili Lela 2472
3 IM Khukhashvili Sopiko 2451
4 IM Khurtsidze Nino 2420
5 IM Khotenashvili Bela 2438

3. Ukraine (UKR 2463)

1 GM Lahno Kateryna 2483
2 WGM Zhukova Natalia 2457
3 IM Ushenina Anna 2474
4 IM Gaponenko Inna 2438
5 WGM Zdebskaja Natalia 2410

Surfing on the Net - luglio 2009

update 26 luglio

1 Rusland GM Vladimir Malakhov 2707
2 Danmark GM Peter Heine Nielsen 2680
3 Holland GM Sergei Tiviakov 2674
4 Armenien GM Gabriel Sargissian 2667
5 Rusland GM Alexey Dreev 2660
6 Israel GM Evgeny Postny 2647
7 Israel GM Boris Avrukh 2641
8 Ukraine GM Yuri Kuzubov 2635
9 Sverige GM Emanuel Berg 2610
10 Sverige GM Tiger Hillarp-Persson 2596
11 Sverige GM Evgeny Agrest 2590
12 Indien GM Parimarjan Negi 2590

1 Parimarjan Negi 2590 8½ 57 57
2 Boris Avrukh 2641 8½ 53 54.5
3 Vladimir Malakhov 2707 8 57 54.75
4 Gabriel Sargissian 2667 8 57 54.75
5 Peter Heine Nielsen 2680 8 56.5 53.5
6 Evgeny Postny 2647 8 54 52.75
7 Sergei Tiviakov 2674 8 53 51.75

Sicilienne Alapine code eco B22

Questi i partecipanti:

GM IVANCHUK Vassily UKR 2786
GM SHIROV Alexei ESP 2726

Previsto un girone doppio all'italiana.

Desden Olympiad: The Leaders Falter In Round 9

olympiad_logo

ChessBase.com Report

Two major shocks pulled the two teams that had been leading all the way away from the top: Armenia lost to Israel in the open section, and the overpowering Chinese lost to Serbia in the women's section. Suddenly on this snow-covered weekend in Dresden we have Israel in the sole lead in the former and Ukraine, Poland and Serbia leading the latter section. Full illustrated report.

Round nine Open Section

The shocker was Armenia's loss to Israel, with Levon Aronian traumatically losing a rook ending to perennial Boris Gelfand. The final score was 2½:1½. Meanwhile Ukraine beat Russia, with the top three boards drawing and Alexander Morozevich losing to Zahar Efimenko. The result: Israel has taken the lead in the 38th Olympiad, with 16/19 match points, followed by Armenia and Ukraine, with 15/18 each. Behind them are China, England and Serbia, all with 14/18. Russia is in the next group of nine teams with 13/18 each.

Israel clear first after beating Armenia

Karpov making the first moveAnything can happen in the decisive last two rounds of the Olympiad in Dresden after Israel surprisingly but convincingly beat Armenia. The Chinese women dropped to shared 4th after losing to Ukraine, who now share first with Poland and Serbia. Round 9 report with games, results, standings and a very interesting press conference on video.

The Chess Olympiad takes place 12-25 november in Dresden, Germany. ChessVibes provides on-the-spot coverage from the venue, until the end of the tournament.

Before we go to the 9th round, first we’d like to draw your attention to yesterday’s very interesting, 45-minute press conference in which former world champions Anatoli Karpov and Alexander Khalifman were interviewed. Topics like Fischer, Olympiads, the Russian team and opening books were extensively discussed. Enjoy!

Round 9 press conference with Anatoli Karpov, Alexander Khalifman and Robert von Weiszäcker:

During the 9th round, one could see Levon Aronian using paper handkerchiefs throughout the day - he has a cold, and it might have prevented him from playing at his top level. And you really need this when you want to stand a chance against a Boris Gelfand in top shape - the Israeli GM is showing the form he was in during the world championship in Mexico last year and convincingly beat the Armenian board one, with Black.

A big blow for the Armenians, who couldn’t make up for it at the lower three boards, against an Israeli team playing without the experience of Sutovsky and Smirin, but with the energy of the young GMs Roiz and Rodshtein. The former drew with Akopian and the latter beat Petrosian, and so the match was decided; it didn’t matter that Gabriel Sargissian added another point to his massive score (now 8/9!) against Avrukh.

Another important result was Ukraina’s victory over Russia. In a wild game that shouldn’t be missed (go to the selection of games right now!) Ivanchuk and Kramnik drew, the same result as in Karjakin-Svidler and Grischuk-Eljanov (where Black drew the famous rook plus f- and h-pawn versus rook). And so Ukraine’s board four Zahar Efimenko became the match winner, beating Alexander Morozevich (who by the way has dropped from second to fifth place in the live ratings).

And so it looks like Russia is again not going to win gold at an Olympiad, despite having the highest rated players in the team. According to Karpov, the reason is that after he and Kasparov left, Russia is missing a clear leader in the team. An interesting theory that might have some truth in it…

Armenia and Ukraine are now sharing second place, one point behind Israel. The following group, on 14/9, consists of China (who beat France 1-3), England (they defeated Vietnam 1-3) and, surprisingly, Serbia. They upset Azerbaijan by drawing on the first three boards, and Bojan Vuckovic managed to beat Rauf Mammadov.

And in the women’s section, Serbia is doing even better! Yesterday they surprised everyone by winning against China. Alisa Maric’s 3…Nc6 French couldn’t to it against a patient Hou Yifan, but an even more patient Natasa Bojkovic, who went for an unambitious approach of the Ruy Lopez Exchange, simply outplayed Zhao Xue. She actually missed a quicker win (40.Qg5 is curtains).

Andjelija Stojanovic drew with Shen Yang and then Chinese hopes rested on Tan Zhongyi, who had started in Dresden with five out of five but lost her sixth game. But no, she lost again. She was better after the opening but Cheluskinja’s active play forced her to sacrifice her queen, which should have been enough for at least draw. However, after the blunder 38…Rff2 (Black is still better after 38…d4!) it was suddenly over.

For the second day in a row, the German ladies played 2-2, and again didn’t draw a single game! This time the fight was with Luxembourg, for whom this result was just great. Their first two boards Elvira Berend (2328) and Anna Waganer (2246) both won, against Elisabeth Pähtz (2471) and Ketino Kachiani-Gersinska (2371) respectively!

Both Poland and Ukraine profited from the surprising result on the top boards and share first place with Serbia now, one point ahead of China, Armenia and Georgia.

Today’s top pairings in the open section: Ukraine-Israel, Serbia-Armenia and England-China. In the women’s there’s Serbia-Ukraine, Armenia-Poland and China-Georgia. We’ll be witnessing a very exciting last two rounds of the Olympiad!

Armenia beats France; USA women defeat Russia

Russia-ArmeniaArmenia swept France 3½-1½ and Germany lost their first match against Israel. The Chinese ladies were held to 2-2 again, this time by Ukraine, and USA beat Russia 3-1! Round 8 report with games, results, standings and the press conference on video.

The Chess Olympiad takes place 12-25 november in Dresden, Germany. ChessVibes provides on-the-spot coverage from the venue, until the end of the tournament.

Although everything is usually decided in the last two rounds of the Olympiad, Armenia are the clear favorites for gold after their crushing victory over France. Bacrot and Aronian quickly bashed out loads of theory but in their highly topical Marshall ending there was nothing new under the sun; White has an extra pawn but against Black’s bishop pair it’s impossible to convert it.

And then… Armenia just won their other three games. Akopian totally crushed Vachier-Lagrave’s irregular Najdorf with the nice 18.Bh5! and the even nicer pointe 19.Bxg6! and Sargissian easily equalized against Fressinet, who then found himself in a lost ending just a few inaccurate moves later. Tkachiev dared not to accept Petrosian’s Evans Gambit pawn (fantastic Tigran, you’re our hero!) and instead of romantically, the Frenchman went down positionally.

Germany lost their undefeated status against Israel, who have good-old Boris Gelfand on board one doing very well; currently he’s fourth on the list of best performers in Dresden. Against Germany he decided the match with the only victory, over Naiditsch.

In both sections USA and Russia played each other and in the open it was Russia who took the two match points with a 1½-2½ win. Kamsky beat Svidler, but this was more than compensated by Grischuk and Jakovenko who beat Nakamura and Akobian. After winning against The Netherlands, Vietnam continued to surprise by holding China (who left out Wang Yue) 2-2.

Much has been written about the pairing system in Dresden, but the fact that after just one upset (versus Bosnia & Herzegovina) New Zealand plays Ukraine in round 8 of an Olympiad can’t be right (with all due respect for the kiwis!). Naturally the match ended in 4-0.

Bulgaria’s 2-2 versus Belarus only increased Topalov’s chances to win gold at board one and England recovered with a small victory against Georgia thanks to a brillant Black game by Short. Carlsen’s win versus Navara shouldn’t be missed either.

Drama for the Aussies who lost a match they should have won. Zong-Yuan Zhao, David Smerdon and Stephen Solomon drew reasonably balanced games but Darryl Johansen had been considered a certain win the larger part of the match. In a totally won position he completely lost track and suddenly found himself getting mated.

Top pairings for today: Armenia-Israel, Poland-Germany, Russia-Ukraine, Serbia-Azerbaijan and France-China.

Round 8 press conference with, among others, Henrik Carlsen and blitz world champion Leinier Dominguez:

The big news in the women’s section was of course the USA blowing away Russia 3-1, shattering world champion Kosteniuk and her team’s last hopes to win the gold medal. Krush’s opening and early middlegame didn’t look very healthy, but the way Kosteniuk tried too refute it was just too bombastic. Zatonskih provided that it’s quite possible to play for a win with the Petroff and that was it - with two meaningless draws on boards 3 and 4 Russia went off and took their cold shower.

China on the other hand is comfortably cruising to gold, adding another two match points to their already impressive score by defeating Ukraine. This match was decided on board two, where Zhao Xue smashed Natalia Zhukova - husband Grischuk might have to explain some details of that Tarrasch once more.

Germany-Estonia was a fightful tie, in which all games were won by White, and Poland did a very good job with their 3-1 against Hungary. Armenia was clearly superior to Azerbaijan (4-0) and Argentina upset Czech Republic 2½-1½. Sweden beat neigbour Norway 4-0; their board one Pia Cramling is now on six out of six!

China takes up Serbia today and on board two, yes it’s true, Luxembourg plays, against Germany.

Armenia beats Russia; Chinese women held by USA

Russia-ArmeniaIn the 7th round of the Olympiad the Armenian team did very well in their efforts to win another gold medal by beating the Russian favorites 2½-1½. Still undefeated, Germany is now sharing second with Israel and France. The Chinese women dropped their first match point against the USA. Round 7 report with games, results, standings and the press conference on video.

The Chess Olympiad takes place 12-25 november in Dresden, Germany. ChessVibes provides on-the-spot coverage from the venue, until the end of the tournament.

The 7th round included the crucial match between Armenia and Russia, which was decided on board three where Sargissian beat Grischuk. In what might have been a great bit of preparation, or just an excellent over-the-board reaction to Black’s novelty 11…Nc7, White sacrificed a piece for long-term attacking chances and after he got e5-e6 in, he could comfortably play for a win. The final king march was very nice as well.

Aronian-Kramnik was a very interesting Anti-Moscow Gambit where Kramnik improved upon Aronian-Caruana, played in the first round of this Olympiad, with 13…Qf6. In a sharp ending Aronian decided to go for perpetual. Akopian used Jeroen Piket’s pet line in the Closed Ruy Lopez to draw against Svidler and Jakovenko couldn’t win a double rook ending with an extra a-pawn - something that’s usually won with just one pair of rooks.

Despite Naiditsch’s first loss, against Nisipeanu, Germany stayed undefeated and actually beat Romania 2½-1½. Gustafsson improved upon his game of last month against Sargissian and then easily refuted Istratescu’s piece sac and Baramidze played a great game where his opponent Vajda was just blow away after the opening, and especially after eating the poisened pawn on f5.

Round 7 press conference with, among others, Fabiano Caruana and Jan Gustafsson:

China and Ukraine shared match points with four draws and France and Israel fought themselves up the special stage by beating India and Spain respectively. USA beat Hungary (who decided to leave out Polgar) and will face Russia today. France takes up Armenia on the top boards and Israel will play the Germans. (Oh, and by the way round 7 included quite an upset on board 15 where New Zealand beat Bosnia & Herzegovina 2½-1½!)

The Chinese ladies lost their first match point in this Olympiad against the US ladies; Hou Yifan did win on one against Krush but top scorer Tan Zhongyi lost to Katerina Rohonyan. Both Germany-Italy and Russia-Poland were hard-fought 2-2’s but Ukraine crushed The Netherlands to take over clear second place with 12 out of 7, behind China’s 13/7.
